Is it possible to just buy a retina screen and install it onto a macbook pro 15' standard? The screens can be bought cheap here: Apple MacBook Pro 15" A1398 mc975 MC976 RETINA LCD Screen LP154WT1 (SJ) (A1) GD | eBay

If it were possible to install (which I would say is highly unlikely) the machine would not look right nor would the lid close because the bottom chassis and keyboard are completely different between the classic and Retina.

I didn't say replace the LCD housing just the actual LCD while retaining the original housing on a macbook pro, did you even click on the link? Talking about "fit" probably doesn't matter, unless it's a different aspect ratio all together, it's still 15 inches right?

its still 15.6" however the dimensions are different and the panel is a pain to disassemble. good luck with that.

Not to mention the cable connector on the logic board is probably different as well.

indeed more than probably. -
no it will not. the classic still used LVDS signals for running the LCD and the retinas use i-DP to handle the resolution. Your cables and graphics interface will be totally different another i-DP equipped machine may be able to use it but I am not brave enough to check
