At Photokina? No. A processor upgrade does not warrant an Apple announcement. Photokina will likely be more about Aperature and maybe a preview of CS3. My opinion is that Merom will just show up at the store one day, the same way the new iMac's came out.

As for waiting, Apple is going to upgrade soon, so if you can hold out a little longer it may be worth it. However, most people will not see a big difference between Yonah and Merom.

The only reason you'd want to wait is if you're planning to keep that computer for the next 3-4 years, when 64-bit programs will be the norm.

People say it'll be announced today. Is there any truth in that? We'd see. ;)

Haha by then, most people are in the market for a new one anyways. Last I checked about Moores law, it stated that technology in terms of advancement is doubled every 9 months, since moore has stated that law, it still holds true to present day.

Just get what you need now, because like Fidy said, in about 3-4 years 64bit will be the norm, but by then you'll need much more processing power than you have now as by then we'll be also seeing even more cores than dual core that we see now. I know software companies won't miss the opportunity to let their imagination run wild, especially Apple.

If I'm not mistaken the new version is overdue. I am hoping there will be a redesign even if it takes awhile. I do not want to deal with unexpected shut downs and would like something cooler running. I just don't feel the time is right to purchase yet and I believe Apple is working on a better solution/version as we post.

The shutdown issue has already been addressed, anything after week 35 is suppose to be free of that problem.

Not to be a pedant, but it's 18 months :D

(or, as stated in that article, 18-24)

That said, I agree that it will be a while before 64-bit apps are the norm and 32-bit no longer cuts it, so just buy a MBP if you want one - the difference won't be all that great.

Bah, I know that merom will come out right when my 14 days are up. I just know it!

But as crazy powerful as this thing is, I really don't think I'll care that much.
