So my teacher is thinking of buying a MacBook Pro, and asked me to find some stuff out for him

He wants to know if there are programs for Mac that can deal with .doc(x) files, as well as him being able to save new documents in .doc format, so that they can work with the windows pc he has in his class?

I told him that Office is available for Mac, so he also wants to know if a Full applications suite comes pre installed on a new MacBook Pro, or if only trial versions are available

    Thanks

MS Office 2008 for Mac does not come preinstalled, nor is there a trial. It would be an extra purchase.

In addition to MS Office, there is also Apple's iWork which can handle Office document formats as well. Not as expensive as Office, however obviously not Office.

Is iWork able to work with Office files, namely .docs and excel files correctly

Or does it have some issues due to different coding

Also does iWork come pre loaded?

Any free office suites available for mac as there are with pc

iWork is an additional purchase, just like Office.

    Google is your friend!

    You have 2 choices:

    Open Office for Mac
    http://www.openoffice.org/
    or
iWork which has a free 30 day trial
    http://www.apple.com/iwork/
    a
    :)

ps while both will be able to open, edit and save office files, there is likely to be some formatting, fonts etc that are not 100% correct.
