I just bought a Mid 2012 15' (12/10/2012 manufactured date) retina macbook pro, as well as tested my friends mid 2012, and I've noticed that the keyboard is very stiff compared to the 2013's and that the upper row keys are stiffer than the lower keys (pause, play, volume keys opposed to z x c v). In addition, I find it peculiar that my number keys sometimes produce a clack sound when I depress it specifically on the lower left corner.

My hunch was that there must've been liquid spilled onto the keyboard but I've pulled the keys out to inspect underneath and was unable to find any residue.

Does anyone have any similar experience or input on this?

I'll check mine when I get home from the office and the bike shop.

I also have a mid-2012 MBPr I inherited from work. When I got it, along with some nice scrapes and dents, it had several keys where the clips were broken, so the keys flopped around and the broken bits underneath caused the keys to press down strangely. I replaced all of those keys with new ones and removed all of the debris.

I don't notice any unusual key motion compared to a new Retina (my work is an all-Mac shop so they are in my hands frequently). The option key and the 2 key have the same feel. One thing with these, is they are *so* thin, that even minor changes underneath can affect the keyboard. As the lower 40-ish% is all battery, it's very solid. The rest is all circuit board and varying height components, and may not feel quite as solid when typing.

Option and 2 key have the same clacking sound/loose feel?

    Thanks for sharing your experience.

The top of the key is not firmly rooted to the mechanisms under it. There is some play in the pressing of the button. This is inherent to a degree in all of Apple's laptops, and I notice it to a lesser extent with the newer Lenovo ThinkPads. I assume this play gives the keys durability. If they were perfectly rigid, presses in the corners would risk breaking the mechanisms underneath.

Thanks for your insight. With regards to my clacking, it comes and goes so I guess I'll just have to live with it heh.
