Well what are you studying? That is the most important question as we don't know whether or not some of your courses will require windows base softwares.

As for documents, Office for Mac uses the same format as office for windows. There are plenty of students out there with Macs. But first you will need to answer the question above for us to know what exactly you will be using it for.

And don't forget that there is also iWork which is supposedly Apple's "equivalent" to MS Office applications... you can still read/save a MS Word or Excel format. iWork is also less $$$ than the MS software. But sometimes it is best to be using the same tools as everyone else so in that case MS Office for Mac wouldn't be a bad idea. I have iWork in my OS X environment but I hardly use it. I usually do my real business related work in the bootcamp windows partition and while there I use MS Office Pro 2007.

Also know that you can have dual boot (win and os/x). Plus, most of the good games are available only in Win and not as many available for the MAC OSX. Thats another reason to perhaps go with a dual boot setup. And if you have a dual boot, then may want to consider getting MS Office for the native Windows environment (it's a bit better than the MAC version of Office in my opinion).

And that leads to another thought... if you end up doing all your work in MS Office in a windows environment... and if all of your games are in the Windows environment... then why not just buy a regular windows laptop? I'll tell you why, because MACs are fun ;)

    *ps:

also, I've been reading that MACs are becoming more and more popular among students at the Universities. I've even read that they are out numbering PC laptops at places like ASU here in Phoenix. I don't know if that is really true or if it is propaganda from Apple, LOL. But the point is, see what most of your professors and classmates are using and recommending. I know that I'd want to use a MAC myself if I were still in school, but thats just me.

you can buy it at airport to get your duty free discount, depending on which university you are going in Australia, there are computer stores that sell Apple on site. Also, in January till March, Apple offers $200 cashback on Ipod with Laptop purchase (basically a free Ipod Nano) and Australian university students get 10% off on any Apple computer purchase using your university ID.

However, if you come from US, then at the current exchange rate, US has the cheapest Macbook Pro in the world...

    Do some research:
    - Find out what applications you'll be using and whether there's a Mac-version or Mac-equivalent of it.
    - Find out whether your Uni's IT department has Mac guys. Do they require special software to connect to their network?
    - What games are you into? Something light like WoW (which has a Mac client anyway) or something Windows-only which will require Bootcamp or Crossover?

I would also suggest holding off until the 26th, just in case apple updates the mbp line then.

But if price/cost is an issue then why not consider the white macbook. Good bang for buck.

    :)

ps now days software compatibility is much less of an issue, and running mac in a windows world is very possible an no more expensive than running windows... just need to do your homework first and figure out what programs you need etc.

Australian universities give out softwares for connecting to the university network and internet access in both Mac and PC format. So there should be no worry about compatibility, since many of the Arts, Architectural and Science departments staffs use iMAC and Macbook Pro in their offices.

I use them too on odd occasions...

    ^^^^
Highly unlikely, Apple is not at CES, and it dumped Macworld which is normally around the same time, so no the earliest new mbp will come will be the suggested apple event in late Jan 2010
