My Powerbook has the old 4200 RPM Fujistu MHT2060AT 60 Gigger and the combo DVD-CDRW drive is broken...
I'd like a 7200 RPM drive, but fat chance if I can find one in ATA-6. Will the interface even support that kind of speed? Anyone experience a noticable performance increase with a 5400 RPM drive?
Can I adapt a SATA drive into a 1GHz 15" Aluminum PowerBook? The selection of SATA gear is better.
Battery life is important too. Looking for the 100+ GB neighborhood.
Secondly, I'd like to replace the optical drive. I've read about the Optiarc AD 7360A. Never heard of that brand though, so I'm a little wary. Any good DVD-RW's and anything I should know about putting one in this PowerBook? I know Apple hardware and laptop hardware is somewhat finicky.
I'd ideally like to flash it to RPC1 for region freeness.

what about this?

The increased platter density should make up for the slower 5k rpm speed. -
PATA 7200RPPM drives are quite expensive right now as you've noticed. I've used some of the newer 5400RPM drives and they offer pretty good performance at a more reasonable price.
This may be worth a look:

Just scored an Apple OEM Pioneer DVR-K06 Dual Layer DVD-RW drive which appears to have an RPC1 firmware available. (Based off of Firmware rev. Q609)
I know about the prices of PATA 7200 RPM drives. Availability seems to be even worse. I got the ONLY 100 GB 7k100 Hitachi HTS series for my Toughbook offa eBay... For $200
*sigh*
