Just a really quick and perhaps already asked question but will I need to reformat my computer when I install Leopard or can I keep everything?

You'll keep everything when you install it I think.

For the record, Leopard isn't out yet until October

if you install leopard you can decide whether or not to reformat your machine.

i will just for peace of mind, but really that is above the call of duty. a simple update-install should suffice.

It's really too early to talk about how to install Leopard. Most likely it won't even be available until the end of october. You cannot get any beta version legally unless you attended WWDC and sat in the keynote.

Yeah, reformating when installing a new OS is usually a good idea, from Windows experience of course.

There were all sorts of weird settings and leftovers from my XP-to-Vista upgrade even from Microsoft's own Vista-certified software (including stuff they bundled with Vista!), and all sorts of problems that appeared later. It's just safer to do a clean install.

Hopefully OSX is better in that department

Dang, that stinks, I was hoping they would offer an open public beta like what Microsoft did for Vista.

I agree, at this point since Apple is no longer keeping secrets (to our knowledge) about the OS it would be better if they just allowed everyone to have a public beta for Leopard. The first version of OS X was offered as a public beta to anyone free of charge see we could report back bugs.

I think you can download it from Apple if you are an ADC member.

But you must be a real member, not the free or student kind.

It is too soon to know if a format will be necessary for Leopard or not. It is likely that you will want to format as upgrading usually can cause problems.

Historically, you don't have to. Whether you want to or not is another matter, however. Some people prefer doing a reformat, others not. I'll wait for release and decide then, myself.
