Maybe because I've always used PC, but I've yet to come across anything in playing with my new MBP that relates to registering my purchase. Does Apple use some other method to track my purchase for warranty info?

Normally on your first boot you are asked for your name, address, primary use etc. If you are connected to the internet that links that info to your serial number.

Alternatively the first time you call Apple support they will collet the information then.
