I hear that macs have great resale value.. Say if I was to buy a 2.16ghz MBP and add a stick of ram, about how much could I get for it in a couple of years assuming no major defects, scratches etc. etc. Also would the last year of applecare raise the value significantly?

Resale value on any laptop is terrible because of the constant change of hardware and new technology. With faster processors, DDR3, Flash Memory Drives, DirectX10 chips, Santa Rosa, HSDPA, and LED-displays on the horizon, I wouldn't expect too much.

I'd say $800 to $1200, depending on the exact specs and the cosmetic condition.

That is true of PCs not Macs. Generally Macs hold their value very well.

As for the OP, I would not venture a dollar amount, noone knows how the intel switch will affect value. First there will be more frequent updates, second the prices on many of the new Macs is falling. Lastly, there are more and more Mac users because of the switch. The more users the lower the value. The good news is there are still relatively few compared to PCs and I expect the value to still be much higher than PCs, but maybe not as high as the PowerPCs. I also think a lot of the added value was because old Macs tend to run newer programs for Mac just fine.
