(picture from Appbank, run on an iPhone 3G)

It appears that Capcom has ported Resident Evil 4 to the iPhone. It was released into the Japanese App Store for a little while, then it was pulled. Judging by early screenshots, Capcom has some work to do. This might've been a pre-beta release that was accidently released, or Capcom might just want to release the port worldwide at the same time. Some of the zombie models look like placeholders. I'll be really disappointed if the game doesn't have enhanced graphics for the 3GS that make it look exactly like the Gamecube version, if not better. Since the iPhone 3GS is significantly more powerful than the Gamecube, with 232MB more RAM, a processor that's 115MHz faster, and a graphics card that pushes 8 million more pixels, Capcom really has no excuse not to have different graphics settings for pre-iPhone 3GS devices and the iPhone 3GS. This is big news for iPhone gaming since this is the first major console game to be ported to the iPhone. I've always thought that if one game was perfect for the iPhone, it would be Resident Evil 4.

I wasn't sure if could post about the iPhone in Apple section. I have seen people post about iPods and iPhones even when it wasn't directly related to the Mac, so I figure a thread for a major release would be fine.

iPhone more powerful than a GameCube? Please. Keep some dignity. (This is coming from an iPhone owner without a GC).

Compare any GameCube RE game to ANY iPhone Game.

I'll believe it when I see it (I don't expect Capcom to release a GC quality game on the iPhone if no one else can either).

Even if the iPhone could pump out the pixels to run a better-than-GC version of RE4, I want to see someone run it for more than 7 minutes on the battery.

Only the iPhone 3GS is more powerful. Compare the specs of the two.

    iPhone 3GS

    600MHz ARM processor
    256MB RAM
    PowerVR SGX535 (28 MPolys/s)

    Gamecube
485MHz PowerPC processor (may be comparable since this is a different architecture)
    24MB RAM
    ATI Flipper (20M Polys/s)

The iPhone 3GS also has to push a lower resolution, opening up the possibility for even better graphics and performance.

It appears that Capcom is actually porting the mobile port of Resident Evil 4 to the iPhone, which is disappointing, considering that the iPhone is capable of a much better port. This was pulled, though. Maybe Capcom decided to port the game directly from the original versions, rather than releasing a port of a port made for much more inferior phones. I'm not even sure the mobile port was released past its' announcement.

Different architectures my friend. They make a VAST difference. Sadly, the iPhone is not as powerful as the gamecube. It's just built differently- even if the specs look better, they're not.

lol the gamecube 485mhz powerupc processor... is a lot more powerful than the ARM Processor. Also, the iPhone is running an operating system.

also, in the gfx chipsets, they also have different features. i doubt the powervr supports full scene normal/bump mapping. Gamecube had few games that had the bump mapping, and also hardware shading.

the iphone 3gs isn't more powerful than hte gamecube.

To be honest I do love the idea of these games coming to the iphone....fun to play while on the bus or something...but to be honest I have big thumbs, so it's hard for me to play at times haha :D

oh yeah don't get me wrong. i am ecstatic about RE4 coming to the iPhone.

i just know not to expect the same RE4 that is found on the Wii / PS2 / GC (they are all basically the same).

Yeah too true! I will say though, it's great they push this sort of stuff onto the iPhone, really shows a lot of potential!

Just wish a good RPG would get developed for it, might even try that next year for my 4th year project :O

Capcom has announced that the Resident Evil 4 port will be released in the Japan App Store by the end of July, then in the US shortly after.

It's available now for $8 in the US App Store! It's only been up for a few minutes, I'm actually the first person to notice. I'm thinking about buying it right now, you can't go wrong with an $8 Resident Evil game. You heard it here first :D.

Here are the first pictures of the US version (taken by me, and uploaded from an iPhone 3GS):

So far, the graphics look good, though not as good as I was expecting. I'll post a comparison between the Gamecube and iPhone versions soon. It was obviously made for the iPhone and iPhone 3G, so the iPhone 3GS only plays it smoother. The controls feel clumsier than Resident Evil: Degeneration's controls, though it should be easy to get used to the controls. I'd recommend buying it if you want Resident Evil whereever you go, it's a better game than Resident Evil: Degeneration, as expected. $7.99 seems like a good value as well. I would grab it now in case Capcom pulls it like they did with the Japanese version. The Japanese version was supposed to come out first, then the US version was set to release in August.

I got pretty lucky. I searched for Resident Evil 4 a few hours ago, then exited the App Store when Resident Evil 4 didn't come up. Then, the next time that I opened the App Store, Resident Evil 4 showed up. I thought about buying it for a minute, then I figured that I couldn't wait for the app to come out, and $7.99 is a decent price as long as it's atleast decent, which it seems to be so far.
