Well they use less power, so you can get faster processors in portables (iphone/touch/ipod), so theyd be faster and more powerful, and use less battery life.

    No, you're not.

These chips are in direct competition with Intel's mobile or desktop processors. They are however a direct competitor with Intel's new Atom architecture. I was just speculating that maybe Apple is going to move their mobile devices (and perhaps future Air ultra-portables) back to the power architecture.

Yea, I see this as an alternative to Atom, I doubt you'll see non-Intel chips in Apple's laptops in a while. This is probably going to be used more in iPhones and other very small electronics. After all, the iPhone doesn't use an Intel chip right now, anyways...

The PA chips apple is after are strictly the mobile market(and I don't consider laptop computers in this). iPhones, iPods, Apples car integration with VW, will all potentially be using the PA Semi processors.

agreed, think how much effort it was to get adobe, ms, et al to migrate completely to osx on intel

the last thing apple will do is switch back especially or only part of the lineup

who would want a mba that only runs a fraction of the already limited applications on osx

As long as there's no issue with Intel (and its all looking good for the next while), I see no reason Apple would go back to PowerPC. Intel's doing fine.

I don't see them going from intel to PPC at all. The Atoms are supposed to be running from 2-8 watts. And blow the hell out of ARM.

While it may be okay to have the PPC in mobile devices.... they better keep them the hell out of the computers. I hate PPC.

Yeah, I'll renege on my believe that these chips will be in future apple products. Apparently they just bought the company for the intellectual property. Hopefully they'll put the engineers to good use.

PowerPC isn't entirely dead. All the game consoles have Power products in them nowadays.
