I have a core2duo macbook and I just wanted to install Diablo 2 because I haven't played it in years... this was the first time I ever tried installing it in OSX because I've always had a PC before this... the problem is, I always get an error at the end when the expansion disc is almost done installing...
this is what it says:
The file "Exp\DF.BNUpdate" could not be read, because an error 38 occurred. (MPQFile::Read)
The game is BRAND new because I just bought a whole new "battle chest" so i could play it again... so the disc is not scratched or anything like that
also, i tried installing it in parallels too but it says there are no working video modes that will allow it to work in windows...
any suggestions / tips that would make this work??
it would be much appreciated!!!
THANK YOU!!!

Is there a way to tell OSX to run it under PowerPC emulation? I don't like the expansion hat much neways, its overpowering, I also started playing D2 again

i'll add you -
Don't forget you have to run it in "Software" mode, not OpenGL.
-
Yeah, Diablo 2 doesn't support OpenGL, just DirectDraw. Direct 3D and 3DFX Glide

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA
oh my god haha i had the d2x twitch just 2 days ago and i havent left my seat since haha my god the irony!
i dun know why ur having that problem with the installer; it worked fine for me on a 2.2. As for the opengl support ... the game itself has no problem supporting it in os x; it is just apples shear lack of... well any form of well written /incorperated driver thats the problem. -

thats what i get for not reading and just being excited at the title having 'diablo 2' in it ha! -
That game seriously took over one of my summers. Lots of Level 80+ characters fully decked out. I had bots running. Mule accounts. I was part of Diablo clan. I had to break my disk to keep me from playing it. I sorta wanna start playing again, but i know what'll happen. Thats also why I stay away from WoW.

hi
ive been trying to download my old diablo 2 cds on my intel mac core duo and ive downloaded native and ive tried downloading witht tha and still no luck.
Every time i download right as it finishes it says The file "/Volumes/Diablo II Play Disc/Diablo II Graphics" could not be read, because an error -36 occurred. (InstallerFile::Read)
THanks -
The reason it won't work for D2 is because it was written for OS Classic.
But it's odd you had to d/l the installer with the battle chest. I bought it a few months ago, and the OS X installer was on the disc. However, playing in software mode kinda sucks. I'd play it under bootcamp so you can get the OpenGL rendering to work. -
ok.. so i was successful in installing diablo 2 and the expansion on my macbook but when i tried running the game a messaga came up which said "The application Diablo 2 has quit unexpectedly." IT keeps doing this and i can't play the game. How do i fix this?

It's a clear sign for you to not play d2 right now. It'll just make you frustrated that d3 won't be coming out for several months yet.
But check this link here http://us.blizzard.com/support/search.xml?gameId=Diablo+II&categoryId=2613&searchQuery=os+x and see if anything helpful is there.
If you're running this under Parallels, nothing I can really tell you. Low though the requirements for d2 might be, I'm not sure you'd really want to run it on a system with no dedicated GPU through a virtual OS. Try boot camp if you must run it on a Windows OS.
Google parallels and diablo 2 - there are also several macrumor and parallels forum threads on this topic as well. (i'm lazy). -
You have to select 'Software' under Video in Diablo II Options before you can launch it for the first time (otherwise it will crash as you described). After that, click on Battle.net and download the update. You can then change your graphics settings to whatever you want using Diablo II Options.

I tried pression option while starting the game but it still gives me the error. I gave up and uninstalled it. Seems Warcraft III runs fine.

The recent builds of Leopard, since 10.5.3 I believe, have removed 256 color support in the driver for Intel IGPs and nVidia GPUs. Diablo 2 and Starcraft require it which is why it doesn't run. That could be the problem. This hasn't been corrected in 10.5.4, but there seems to be driver changes in the 10.5.5 betas (given reports of delays in releasing Intel IGP drivers in the development seeds) so perhaps a fix is coming.
