hey guys, i been hearing that it is not worth buying the SSD hard drive from the apple website pre-installed on the laptop because they are inferior in performance to other SSD's out there. Now if this is true, can you guys please tell me by how much worse are they? like is it a significant performance decrease from other SSD's? also are the SSD's they offer on the website SATA or the old PATA technology? from what i understand PATA is worse.

Finally I heard that the SSD drives are actually slower in writing on the hard drive then the HDD 7200rpm, is this true or just a myth?

    thanks a lot!

there are slower SSDs out there, they tend to be the cheaper ones... the more expensive SSDs are faster... it is the writing that suffers and the faster ones write a lot faster...

    Try this article:

Apple loves profit margin, so, more than likely, they use the crappier SSDs...

My friend bought a fully decked out MBP 17" with all the options... money being no object and not wanting to piece-meal anything, and the 256gb SSD in there is freaking fast. If I have a chance I'll take a look to see brand and model thats in it, but it smokes the HDDs in my Macs, I didn't expect the SSD to be that fast, that whole machine just screams....

Put Ubuntu on an intel x-25M and any machine will run like a rocket. It's just that fast.
Put Vista on the intel x-25M and the machine will scream.
Put it on XP, and it runs like a jet.
Put it on leopard and it screams.

I hope you get the idea of which OS give which results on a SSD
