Once or twice a day for the past week or so Safari will randomly spike to 60-80% CPU usage (and stay there). Closing it and reopening it solves the problem. I'm really not sure what it could be, though. I haven't visited any non-standard sites; I haven't even visited any sites which I don't go to on a regular basis.
Did I somehow manage to get one of those oh-so-rare Mac viruses, or am I completely overlooking something that is abundantly obvious and simple?

Are there any websites containing CPU intensive stuff (such as Flash adverts) running in the background? Use expose to see if there are any next time this spike occurs. If by closing and reopening you mean closing the browser window and opening a new one, then chances are it's simply caused by some content on the web page you're viewing.

This is exactly why i prefer to use Firefox. RAM is easier to upgrade than CPU -.-

By closing I meant quitting safari. No large flash ads.
