I personally recommend Safari in this case over Mozilla Firebird, in my experiences I always felt like firebird was pretty bulky feeling especially the GUI on it.

However, Firefox instead of Firebird might be better than safari, I never really tried firefox on OS X though.

really it's up to you, both are pretty good browsers, just don't use IE. ;)

I use Firefox and love it. It is something I just cannot give up from my PC! Is it mostly urban legend that Safari does not work with quite a few sites?

Safari doesn't always work perfectly with all sites, but no browser really does. Personal preference is the biggest part of the browser selection process really.

I favour Mozilla myself when running non-OSX operating systems, Firefox is also great (and possibly the most widely used and supported besides Internet Explod...er, Explorer these days). Opera was nice last I used it, but I only need so many browsers so I haven't really looked at Opera for a few years. Not sure Opera even exists for Mac OS X, but I would guess so?

In the end, it's up to you to try them out and pick one that you like, but Safari should work for most things really :) For best support I would choose Firefox though, but I can't say I have run into more than a couple of sites (an online bank being one of them) that didn't want to support Safari.

Firefox has always done me right for the most part. Safari is basically an industrialized port of KMeleon which is a branch off of Mozilla, much like Firefox but not quite as advanced IMO.

Actually Opera just did a simultaneous release of Opera 9 for all major platforms, including OS X. I'm an Opera user, and usually have to be restrained from singing its praises, but browser choice really is a matter of personal preference, depending on what you want out of the browser and what you want to do.

For the record though, Opera rocks, and is rock solid and very fast.

Opera is decent, I tried it once back in the day when it had Ads all over it, and you had to pay to have them removed, that really made it suck big time.

I enjoy supporting open source projects, therefore I use firefox, with firefox its just as fast as Opera, even faster if you make some tweaks.

Opera is now free dude! Advert free and no purchase version.

I can vouch for opera. Brilliant browser. Fast, stable, opera 9s got some very nice features too.
