I want to buy a MB and want to know if it's the right time. I mean, when are the next updates scheduled for? Is there going to be a newer version of the MB? When will Santa Rosa find its way to MBs? I really don't care for Leopard, since I can buy it whenever it comes out (I can't wait until Octobor).

    Short answer: We don't know.

Slightly longer answer: There will certainly be product announcements of some sort at WWDC in June - wait until after that and you will have some more answers at least.

But yes, the Macbooks will get Santa Rosa at some point... and the likeliest scenario is that it happens during the summer so it will be ready for the back to school season. But there's of course no guarantee for this.

Of course I understand that any corrent judgement on the performance of Santa Rosa MBs will come AFTER it comes out and is reviewed. But what do you think will be the difference?

And another question requiring speculation: any newer versions of the MB, how different will they be?

Maybe I can just buy one now and then sell it when something newer comes out. How fast do MBs depreciate in value?

I wouldn't be too worried with Santa Rosa in the macbooks/macbook pros. IT doesn't offer revolutionary performance.

I'm holding out for the possibility of LED backlit screens.

I think you should wait for the Rosetta Stone model. It will be glossy, black and you can write directly on to the tablet screen using mental thought only. Of course, if you've waited that long you may as well wait for the upgraded CPU version that knows what you're thinking.....but that's before the one that tells you what you're thinking...

It's a way off, but it's coming if you're patient enough.

These discussions make me laugh...people worrying about a minor update here or there on a machine that's $1200. I often wonder how these people have copies of Final Cut...hmmm.....if only I could peer to peer hardware..

Btw, I'm more worried about "major updates" and that's why i started this thread.

Leopard will be major update probably.

SR will not be a major update. It's a minor evolution.

Thank you. That's why I asked, to find out what kind of an update it was. So no need to laugh at these kind of questions.
