So I've got my Vista computer and OS X computer on the same network. I set up Mac's file sharing via SMB. So I can see my entire Mac HD from my Vista computer now. I tried transferring some files to it, and it was incredible slow, around 170kbps. I know there's ways to transfer much faster than this, so maybe I'm doing something wrong.
The MacBook is wired to the router, while the Vista is wireless. At the moment I don't have an extra ethernet cable.

Well that's expected due to the wireless network, but still it should be faster then that.
There's a HUUUGE difference in speed between network sharing with wired vs wireless. -
Yay! I did manage to find an extra ethernet cable. Now, I'll try it again and see the results..
Well now the Mac isn't even visible to Windows. They're both on the same network. This is causing a lot headaches.. -

Yah...170kbps is very slow for nework Transfer. With my upgraded wireless G router, file sharing can be as fast as 25 000 - 30 000kbps
-
So I don't get it. Where do I go from here?
EDIT: Okay, after a lot of trial and error, I've got 7-8 mbps wired. Still seems very slow...
EDIT x2: Argh, now trying to move a 6GB folder, it's hover 1-2 mbps. I've got to be doing something wrong... -
AFAIK file transfer speeds between mac and Windows based computers will be slower than normal because of the fact that you are reading and writing from two different formatted drives (HFS+, NTFS).

Should not be a problem. I transfer just as fast between Mac and Windows as between Windows machines.
-
Try connecting using a different protocol, CIFS or AFP (doubt Windows supports this though).
-
When I copied things between my vista pc and macbook for the 'move' I used a network cable between the 2; 1Gbps link, went quite quickly!

i have no experience in networking. hopefully, i'll be getting my wireless n router next week and i'll be able to test drive file sharing from my windows c to my mac.

is your router doing some type of packet handling and shaping? QoS or anything? I always turn that junk off on routers, its supposed to be good, but it never does anything but slow my stuff to a crawl.
