Ok so i know how to share folders in leopard. However everytime i try to share the entire HD i run into this problem. The permissions for "everyone" is restricted to Read only and i want to set it to "No access" Does anyone know how to do this? Username "everyone" has the "No Access" greyed out. please advise.

I am a little confused on exactly what you want to do. So you are trying to share your entire drive and want to limit it to individual users? That is easy. In an admin account, right click on 'Macintosh HD' and choose 'Get Info'. The under the 'Ownership and Permissions' arrow, click the 'Details' arrow to expand it. After that change the ownership to the admin account you are in. From there you should be able to change the permissions for everyone in the groups section. HTH!

Also, it should be noted that even changing the permissions to no access for everyone does not make sharing your entire hard drive a good idea. I highly recommend against it. A better idea is to share some smart folders that will automatically collect the files you are wanting.

Yes that helped. Thank you. I was trying to do that in system pref. under the sharing folder and no matter what i did i couldn't switch "everyone" to "No acess."

Ok so i was able to set permissions on the HD for "Everyone" to "No access" however after i did that and restarted the computer wouldn't boot anymore. it would get stuck on the grey screen where the apple appears and stop. So i tried to load the leopard dvd and repair permissions however i got an error message there too. I formated the HD and started over. Everything was fine again until i set the permissions on the HD for "everyone" to "no access" It seems very obvious that this setting change is causing the laptop not to boot. Does anyone know the reason for this? When the laptop boots does it boot with the Everyone user? The only reason it wont boot is if it can't get access to the HD and I think the "No access" is limiting it. Please help.

haha, I did kind of the same thing without reading this last post. I changed permissions on my drive for 'everyone' from read-only to No Access. I haven't restarted yet because I just read this post, but now I can't change back to read-only. when I click on the lock to gain access I just get a spinning beachball. how do i reset my permissions? when I do it through disk utility it just freezes and stops making progress.

damnit, I'm an idiot. guess this will teach me not to tinker with **** before I know what it'll do to my computer.

haha well I ended up just restoring a time machine backup I had from last night right before I messed with the permissions. it was the first time I had used time machine, and it worked like a charm.

LOL, I guess you missed the last part of my post were I said it probably was not a good idea. Oh well, like jnev said, just use Time Machine to roll back to before the permission change and you should be good.

haha I definitely missed that part as well. ah well. the only thing that time machine didn't backup are my emails in mail that somehow disappeared from their respective folders... they're still on the gmail server so I'm not too worried but it's still kinda weird.
