I've been eyeing a MacBook but I'm worried that if I purchase now Apple will release a MB with a Core 2 Duo. I would rather have the Core 2 Duo because its 64bit and will be compatible with future OS and apps.

Ok, this is why I hate hype. CoreDuo will be perfectly compatible with at least the next two version of OS X (10.5, 10.6). It will be a VERY long time before they have a 64-bit only OS. As far as apps go, most do not benefit from being writen for 64-bit. Firefox is not all of the sudden get faster. 64-bit truly shines in things like renderring and number-crunching. The biggest thing about 64-bit is the mount of RAM it can handle. But again, by the time you need more than 4GB of RAM you will need a new computer.

What I am saying is that by the time 64-bit is necessary, Core2Duo will be just as outdated as CoreDuo. Neither will perform all that well anymore compared to the current processors at the time.

Now, I woud wait if it was a week or two away, but I don't believe the MacBook is a week or two away. I think it may have another month or two.

Actually Core 2 Duo clock-by-clock is about 15-20% faster, comes with doubled cache at 2GHz and above and I really hope Apple will update MB's with a DL-DVD-writer and perhaps a bit better VGA than Intel's crap...

    ...wishful thinking, I know.

By the time Leapord comes out, we should see the new Santa Rose systems. They should have the much better integrated graphic chip.

However, that will be quite a ways away from now.
But it will probably be a few months till MB gets merom (keep in mind, Merom may be a month away from being put in the MBP) so if you need it, I'd get it now.

Besides, benchmarks show that Merom only improves most apps only marginally. Some apps gain up to around 20% increase, but most won't see any improvement.

"Most apps" - just as loose term as my percentage... :)
Media encoding apps apparently (see my links in other thread) enjoy around 20%...

Wait for the new Quad systems in late 2007....just kidding. Go ahead and buy it now if you need it, if you don't need it now, wait as long as you can.
