A girlfriend of mine owns a Macbook Pro 13" unibody from mid 2009, which has some problems: the screen does not work; but if you turn on the device the keyboard lights up and the music CD in the drive starts playing.

She said she spilled a beer over the laptop but that it had some weird problems before. I figure she's just not experienced with computers and that it probably just needs a reinstall and a new LCD screen.

She said I can buy her Macbook Pro for $400.
I can get a new LCD screen on eBay for about $100.

Do u guys think this is worth the risk?
If the music-CD starts playing it means the system is fully functioning right?
Or might there be more hidden problems?

Thanks for your help and advice!

P.S.: I don't know the exact specifications because she doesn't either, and I haven't checked. It's probably a standard model. She paid $1200 for it.

Did she spill beer on it when it was open or closed? Can you hook up an external monitor and try to boot it that way? Beer or anything with water isn't good for electronics. You could probably find a 2010 Model for less than $900.

i wouldnt risk it. not when refurbished is 900 or less. thats with 320m graphics. her 2009 may have 9400m. the best way to go about it would be to do what atbnet said and hook it up to external monitor and see what comes up.

I wouldn't touch it... not worth a 400$ risk... toss it on bay as broken machine and let someones take the risk.

The problem is no one can be certain that the repair is as simple as a reinstall and a new LCD. There may be more extensive damage to the computer's internal parts.

Like Yuio and others said, its not worth the risk even if you scrap the machine for parts and sell them.

agreed, the second moiture hits a MBP I tend to be very leary of ging near it. a motherboard replacement can be WAY in exce of $800. and its not worth the chance of there being mutiple issues. other than just the LCD panel.
