Just did a clean install of 10.9.3/Mavericks on my sister's ( now mine ) mid 2010 macbook pro, I had to log into my sister's appleid to download mavericks because apparently it's attached to her account, she got another macbook pro retina that has yosemite. Is it possible for me to get it if it's attached to her appleid like mavericks was? Should I even bother getting it? I hear people had troubles with it and my gpu.

    Specs are:
2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo
4 gb ram ( Debating how worthy it is to upgrade this )
    320m 256mb
    300gb hdd

edit: derp appearently the command + r method doesn't clean install as it kept everything that was previously here, what's the correct method to wipe this thing?

Given that OS X has been free since the release of Mavericks, you could technically get Yosemite without going through the App Store and have it be more of a gray area than anything else. However, since the computer is already running Mavericks, you should be able to log into the App Store using your own Apple ID and get Yosemite. After the OS has downloaded, you can use a utility called DiskMaker X to create your own Yosemite install USB so you can perform a clean install.

As for debating on upgrading the RAM, I would upgrade to an SSD before anything else. If you don't need hardware-supported encryption, go with a Crucial BX100. Last I checked, a 250GB was just under $100 with a 500GB being about $180.

SSD prices are falling slowly so I was kinda hoping to wait it out as long as possible, got an mx100 250gb for my asus not to long ago for around $110

Kinda worried about yosemite slowing it down, just doing a clean install of mavericks right now.

Since you're waiting to get an SSD, do the Yosemite install when you get it.

Alright thanks for all the help everyone!

Last night I made the boot drive with diskmakerx I had downloaded both Yosemite and mavericks but it would always make a Yosemite boot unless I specifically direct it to mavericks and even then it named the drive Yosemite, after making it I did the disk preferences thing and got the install going but I fell asleep halfway during the install and woke up back at the uncleared desktop. When I get back home am I supposed to just command + r and press the boot drive? Not sure it's just installing it and not clearing like last time or it just went sleep mode and somehow cancelled the install.

Googling people say to use disk utility and wipe the drive and reinstall with the USB?

edit: What I ended up doing was just command + r on boot, disk utlity, erase the drive, then I couldn't figure out how to make it load from the drive so once again I let it download using the internet and everything works fine.

Depending on where you're at you can find a Crucial mx100 for around $190.
