Set it on my couch and it slid off ... really not sure how, it happened like 2 minutes after I left the room and I heard a thud...I was like, crap.
Not a big deal the side with the disc drive is slightly pushed in on one and and the "finish" is kinda rough...
Is there a recommended way on fixing these? I am a perfectionist, almost everything I own is in pretty mint condition![]()
These POS rubber feet don't adhere to anything and just slide around.
-
It might be tough to get that repaired ... I agree the the little rubber feet on macs really don't do much.
-
Really all you can do is either carefully bend it back into shape or sell it on eBay and buy another MBP.

This reminds me of a debate omebody had with me saying how aluminum is so much better & stronger than plastic.
Do you think had this been a normal plastic laptop of good quality that it would be undamaged or at worst just need a good buffing. -
Anyway, to the OP: the problem of the MBP denting isn't isolated to merely cosmetic damage. Having a dent on the SuperDrive side could easily make the drive not work--those slot loading drives are notoriously sensitive :/ Might want to check just in case. -
-
But on the other hand certain manufacturers do have softer rubber compunds that do a far better job, but they look tacky (feels that way too). -
i get you men..... mine got dented like 4 days ago by my puppy

You can replace the casing if it really bothers you, but it's a PITA to swap all the internals, and it'll run you a few hundred dollars.

Maybe for Apple, but little rubber feet on notebooks have been way better for what, 15 years? I've NEVER had a laptop fall off of furniture. Stop making excuses for Apple.
Too much to ask for something to do what it's supposed to? Ridiculous. It's something so basic and so simple, even the most basic of notebooks have had it since what, the 90's?
It's something I noticed with my Dad's MBP. It has no traction whatsoever. I don't even understand why Apple put them there. They're useless. It's always sliding off of his lap, and actually slipped off of my old car's vinyl, flat dash while I was slowly maneuvering my car in a parking lot. Luckily it wasn't damaged since it was a short, soft fall, but I mean come on. You can't even defend that without looking like a total tool. -
It was 2 minor dents. One was close to the front which was annoying because it moved below the bottom panel slightly. The other is more like the finish was removed.
Not sure how I got a dent on the power button though...It lifted up slightly.
Bent the dent back into shape, it's not perfect obviously but good enough, for now.
Found a few sellers on eBay with near mint top cases for about $120, it'll take about an hour to swap, I've switched enough boards out of Macs before, this is my first one and just kinda disappointed. Oh well. -
One time, the LCD housing of my MBP got dented by a textbook in my backpack. I've had other various incidents where it's been dented through falls off of a couch (plastic feet don't grip anything) and through general movements around desks at my school. My MBP seems to attract dents and scratches for some odd reason. It's almost like you need to treat it like an infant if you don't want it to get damaged.

How old is the mbp op?
-
You can always replace the case if you wan to.
-
But anyway, I'd never put any notebook naked in a bag with other stuff. Always put it in a separate sleeve (Tom Bihn is great for that). -

now I too am curious about the chicken broth. now I have a T60 that survived the swimming pool and a Toughbook that survived a weekend out in the rain but I have NEVER heard of chicken broth. -
Chicken broth is pretty good...
Try Vomit... not just a splash... must have completely bathed in it. The user turned it on to see if it was "ok" (mac died) brought it to me and asked me if I could fix it. I almost vomited into the computer I was working on.
(That thing was vile....)
Non-dairy coffe creamer... both in a mac laptop (both were in a backpack along with coffee creamer) and just recently a PC as well. Mac died, PC lived... kinda... screen had to be replaced, we parted out the rest once fully soaked. The only reason the PC lived as the user didn't turn it on while soaked...
Various alcoholic beverages.. (both macs and PCs) Putting either orange juice + alcohol or any carbonated beverage + alcohol is pretty much insta-death. Most of the time the computer tends to be on. The one PC with alcohol + orange juice turned on once fully soaked, but died shortly thereafter.
Jello... do not ask me how this mac user got jello in their mac... I have no idea... thing never booted ever again. -
It involved a rather large bowl of chicken soup, a running (pre-spillproof-keyboard-era) Thinkpad positioned right next to said bowl of soup, and a phone located behind the same bowl of soup.
The phone rang.
You can imagine what happened next.
No soup for me!
By the time I fished it out, the laptop was swimming in the stuff. Lifting it and watching soup pour out of the case like a waterfall was almost entertaining but for the fact the thing wouldn't start again after it dried much much later. -

I think in my second or third service trip in (for unrelated problems), they just agreed to replace the cover. Haven't had that problem with the unibody ones yet, but then I don't really use the palmrest as much now. -
I practically have to swap the main case every 6 months. the earlier unibodies were HORRID for acid pitting, since 09 Ive had alot less problems with it but more issues with bending around the port openings and hinges
-
Honestly I have to ask. I remember the debate raged when Apple first came out with the unibody macbooks. From reading the stories just in this thread, do you guys (and gals) still think it was a good idea to go aluminum in the macs?
-
it was a marketing and aesthetics thing and OK if you treat it like 500 year old golden goblets -
-
Out of curiosity have you guys ever considered one of these?
macbook pro 15 hard case | eBay -
sure have, among many others. some let me get an extra couple months out of a casing but that is all. without them I would need to swap it every 3-4 mos. they dont even touch hinge warping and the interior face of the laptop just top bottom and somewhat the sides.

I don't see an issue with the aluminum unibody design yet. I have only had my MBP since around february of this year (whenever they released the 2011 update) but I like the aluminum a lot more than the complete plastic designs. I was already having issues with my 2005 Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 notebook a few months after I had it. Most were minor (the plastic would actually kind of expand when it got warm making it more difficult to close the optical drive) and some really bothered me (the metal lid had a thick layer of clear plastic that scratched worse than a 1G iPod nano). So far I have not experienced any scratching on my MBP though the magnetic AC adapter has some dark gray scratches on it.

I'm learning to live with it...My MBP isn't a daily notebook anyway, just something to go to starbucks and fit in with people
-
kornchild2002 Notebook Deity
Of course! It is only fun writing on your MBP at a Starbucks if other people are watching you. How about you tell me which Starbucks you go to so that you can watch me write on my MBP and I can watch you write on yours.
-
-
When did you buy thE MBP? -
Starbucks fodder!
But in all seriousness, I hate working on a laptop in Starbucks or any public place really -- you always have to get up for something, and then you're always trying to keep an eye out on your table so that no one steals it. -
and something that is extremly noticable. Husband has been doing this for years and most ppl seem to even be scared to go look at his laptops
-
-
I think one of the responses must have got it right... must have dropped liquid (before setting) jello into the laptop...
Note please, I absolutely refused to fix the vomit one... even if it was fixable. -
- heat (everyone knows about this I suppose)
- damage to the display caused by heat exhaust (commonly leads to light leakage in display)
- swelling battery
- the power supplies often fail long before the computer does
With regards to the aluminum unibody, I personally admire the combination of good design with pleasing aesthetics. But, having owned a ThinkPad T42 prior to my MBP13, I do wish the unibody didn't scratch so easily.
Try this program. Its $15 for a year and its designed for OS X. -

Sigh...Dented my new MBP already
