When is Snow Leopard due? And what will upgrading from current OSX to Snow Leapord be like? Has this traditionally been an easy and issue-free experience? Or will it be like windows where its preferred (sometimes necessary) to do a fresh install?
If its going to be released later this year I may hold off on purchasing a new macbook just to have a fresh install....

My best guess SL would be released sometime this year but I'm no expert on this matter. There could always be delays. We won't know for sure until someone leaks it or when Apple announces it.
When re-installing an OS, there is an option to migrate your old settings, apps & data over. I forgot the exact name. With that said, you could always do that if you don't want to do a fresh install. I have done this before without any issues, but I'm the type of person that likes to do a fresh install every so often and new OS releases. -
I would expect Snow Leopard to be further demoed or possibly released at WWDC 2009 this year, around May-August!

As Sam said, look for WWDC, which is in June. Going from Tiger to Leopard was not without pitfalls for some people. There were a few incompatibilities and the like, but they were sorted out rather quickly. Leopard to Snow Leopard should go smoother since it should not be a major update.

Oh great! So when I pull the trigger for a new MBP they're going to change the OS... hopefully I'll be able to upgrade it. =( this is sad man...lol

there are actually still some fast ppc machines out there.
i doubt snow leopard won't support ppc.
perhaps some features wont be supported.
in fact, i don't think snow leopard will be able to harness the gpu of any mac before the ati 2000 series / geforce 8000 series -
I haven't seen any definitive statements whether or not Snow Leopard will support PPC. Then again, I haven't followed it too closely since it was first announced, so maybe I missed something.
As for the Tiger to Leopard transition, there were several incompatibilities with different apps. There were no hardware issues that I recall which would be expected with Apple's closed environments. Leopard was a fairly big break as far as apps go though, and Snow Leopard probably won't be. -
10.5.7 is not even out yet. I think Snow Leopard is gonna be late '09
-
How about a quad 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 with 8GB of RAM and 512MB of VRAM? That sounds pretty powerful to me, much more powerful than the C2Ds they put in Macs now. Also, a 1.42GHz iBook G4 outbenches the MacBook Air. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

they don't have to hit 10.5.9 before 10.6
it doesn't work that way.
10.5.6 might be the last, or maybe they will go to 10.5.12! -
No 10.5.7 is coming soon. I know they dont have to hit that point.. I was just saying its gonna be a while..
