My upgrade to Snow leopard from Leopard went without incident, and everything works great except for Quicktime.

If I want to watch a WMV file, I get an error message indicating that Quicktime must be installed first to proceed.

The question is this. Can I install Quicktime alone from the Upgrade disk?

I tried the newest version downloaded from Apple's website, however it gives an error upon installation that indicates that the version is incompatible with Snow Leopard. I guess Apple has not updated their download website.

Did you try the FlipWMV plugin?

I can't remember whether this has yet been updated to 10.6, however.

Yes, I tried FlipWMV. It gives an error that indicates that Quicktime must be first installed for FlipWMV to operate.

I think I found the answer though. Under the Cryptically titled folder "Optional Installs" is the Quicktime installer. I took a chance and ran the program, and about four steps in, it gives the option list, for which Quicktime is amongst the group. I rand the installation to the conclusion, and now it works great.

But many thanks for your reply, ClearSkies.

aah, you went back and installed Quicktime 7. Yes, that was an optional install (it was only 64MB or something, so I just did it on my machines for backward compatibility) under the Customize button on the lower left screen where you can also click Install.

Glad it worked out for you.

I think the OP had Quicktime X, he was referring to Quicktime 7 which I guess is the only one that works with WMV files.

It depends on the codecs and not just the format. QT X isn't capable of playing some WMV (or any type) of file that uses codecs that are unsupported (well, obviously).
