This seems like a problem for a lot of SL users over on the other forums. I'm not registered to post over there and am quite frankly too lazy to register to post lol.
NBR is better anyways![]()
But anyways, anyone over here experiencing it?
I live at a Loft where everyone tenant has their own ATT 2wire modem. Periodically, the connection will drop and sometimes, it won't connect back. The 2wire modem at my loft WAS WPA protected and I've read that if you change it to WEP, it would solve the problem. I thought this was legitimate as my 2wire modem back home is WEP protected and my connection never dropped back at home.
So I changed it to WEP here at the Lofts and for about a day, there was no dropped connections. Now, the dropping is back even on WEP. Anyone have a clue as to why?

I had this problem. You can cure it by editing your routers wireless channels. Broadcast in G or B but not N
-
Security won't make a difference. Try different channels, you are probably on like 6 or something witch is common, try some lower channels like 1-3 or the higher ones. Wireless phones (not cellphones) can also cause a problem, they are usually on the lower channels, so going to the highest channel may be your best option.

Alright I'll mess around with different channels. I'll report back to update.

Ok so what kind of computer are you on? If your using the 2wire as the primary router and the encryption is listed as WPA then interference is whats most likely happening. I would attempt to create a new network location in network preferences then set "Airport" for priority in the service order, also in network preferences. After it would be best to power cycle the router and/or change the channel. If the issue is interference then changing the encryption would be useless so stick with WPA. However if you do change to WEP its crucial that the Password be 13 characters or else the Mac will have issues connecting.

Yeah , I've tried channels 1- 10 and each one of them eventually drops my connection. Wackness.

MacBook pros have the n wifi module but most routers don't have it so it causes problems. I don't know how customizable your router is but change it to g only and it will be cured -
most routers dont have " N " 90% of them in the last 3 years have???????????
-
I wouldn't change it to B, unless you want crapperly(new word ;p)slow internet.
-
quite true, B was good for checking e-mail and surving with no multimedia pages

The only thing I can really suggest at this point is relocation on the 2wire. Perhaps resetting the device would be suffice enough. I can't see this being an issue with the computer unless this occurs while connecting to other networks in the area. Wireless security doesn't seem to be the issue either, you could always disable the encryption just to be sure. But I doubt the issue will go away.
I am suggesting a decent 5 Minute power cycle followed by a resetting the router back to default settings.. In the end I would just get a different router. -

your right, they finally agreed on the standard, but yes draft N has been around quite awhile. I do stand corrected

The channel for the 2wire was set as Auto for default. I went ahead and changed it to channel 8, reset the modem and my connection hasn't dropped since then. Thanks fellas
