How can she extract the .dmg so she can send it to me?
-
If she bought you Leopard why does she need to extract the .dmg? She would better send you the package.
-
Because she lives in the US and I live in Venezuela. Couriers are not reliable here as packages always get "lost" in the mail. And sending it via Fedex would cost as much as Leopard itself.
-
That sucks. How can't a courier be reliable? Either way, to clone a CD you need a program like CloneCD or Alcohol120%. She makes an image and then she sends you the image (or uploads it somewhere), your burn the DVD. It doesn't have to be a dmg image.
-
Venezuela is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Somebody sees an interesting package, takes it. Boss asks him, underling bribes him, everybody [but the recipient of the package] wins. That's just how things work around here. It's just one of many ways. I remember one time when I was living in Canada I sent my brother a ps2 game, marked the package as dvd game. It never got there. Had to use fedex, which is freakin expensive internationally.
Anyway, my aunt has a mac, and those two programs are windows only I believe. Are there any others?
Thanks for the help. -
I'm not sure. Basically as long as she can clone the DVD and you get the image there shouldn't be any problem. Have you considered to have the DVD sent inside some clothes in a cheap package? I'm not sure about how expensive FedEx could be. I got a package from Microsoft (via DHL) from US and it all cost around 4$ if I'm not mistaken at the moment. Try getting an idea about DHL pricing. They're a German division of the German Post Office, so they're pretty reliable.
-
Trust me I've considered everything. I made a thread here a couple of week ago trying to look for any possible scenario. Some people even offered themselves to buy it for me and send me an image as well, but in the end it's better just to keep it in the family. By normal mail it's just gonna take too long, and I am traveling to europe in december so I might as well get it there if sending it by mail is the only option, cause the package gets here, its a maze.
I cant wait that long. Thanks anyway though, I'll see if she can use a windows machine somewhere, if not I'll just look for a mac program that can do this somewhere on gooogle. -
-
I know! so is fedex, but it's too expensive!! I will pay probably $90 for their service. On top of what my aunt already spent... definitely don't wanna waste anymore money.
-
Try and find out. Just try. 4$ for 3 DVDs (Windows Server Centro that is) isn't that much.
-
lol, dude, $4 maybe if I live next door to you. I just checked the dhl website, from wisconsin to maracaibo (in venezuela, as in south america) is $94.
-
Hmm... US -> Romania, not quite next door. Microsoft paid for the package.
-
hahah, not quite!! But still, it is cheaper to send things to europe than to south america, even though it's further away than we are. Probably because there is more volume of packages to europe than here, not sure.
still havent found a program that extracts the image for macs... -
Probably. It doesn't need to extract anything. It just have to create one.
Article here, here, here and here. Basically the same information. -
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
she can just give it to me
-
Well yeah.
-
lol @ stealth. And thanks fade_to_black! That is exactly what I needed! Hopefully that isn't too complex for my aunt
-
No problem. Glad I could help. Hope it works.
-
how about you download the the image off torrents or something and then she sends you the key
-
-
I thought leopard didnt have a key? And it's faster to download it from my aunt because I can get 100% my download speed since she has a fast connection. I bet everyone and their grandmother is downloading leopard through torrents right now, it would probably take forever.
-
Does MacOS even require a key? I thought it didn't.

To the OP: Have you even considered having your Aunt return Leopard to store she bought it from, Paypal you the money and you buy it from the Apple online store? Apple ships to nearly every country and so far the posters on this forum and Mac Rumors that live outside the U.S. received their copies of Leopard before many of us in the U.S.
You haven't considered everything if you haven't considered doing it this way. Truthfully it's pirating making any type of copy rather it's a .dmg or anything as it's unauthorized reproduction of the software and that violates the EULA. -
There is a good chance it won't get there. That is one of the **** hole countries of the world. They are just proving once again the socialism doesn't work there. This is a country that has made the news twice now for running out of meat and other foods and moving supplies to there leaders families towns.
The people have few rights, and in general the working class doesn't have a lot of money. Crime is VERY high there and theft is just one of them.
ETA you have to do what you have to do. I'd say contact Apple and tel them of the situation. They may have to ship it a few times or just ask them if they care if you copy it. Venezuela is on many watch lists and most likely Apple would never know or care anyways. Just my .02. -

But yes, it's hard enough to get legal music, since we probably rival china in piracy. I had to create a US paypal account with a venezuelan credit card (dunno how it checked out), and then that way have an itunes store account. Imported software here is sold at ridiculous prices, take Vista Home Basic's ludicrous $800 price tag. When right outside the mall and in every busy intersection a guy with huge dvd stacks can sell it pirated for $2.
Just trying to do the right thing... so any help would be appreciated.
my aunt just im'ed me, she says she got this error in disk utility after trying to create the image:
**********
Oct 27 11:26:21: Disk Utility started.
Creating Image “disk1s3.dmg”
Preparing imaging engine...
Reading whole disk (Apple_HFS : 0)...
Unable to create “disk1s3.dmg” - Input/output error.
Apparently it was right at the end of the process -
It's equally illegal to send an image file because 1 copy of leopard is essentially used by 2 people (your aunt + you).
Therefore, what's the difference between that and getting it off torrent? -
His aunt purchased it for him. She's not using it.
-
There is basically no enforcement of any kind of your country for pirating so my recommendation is to use your own common sense. It's not worth 800 dollars to buy it in your country legally, so find a "place" selling one and buy it as most of the people in your country do. It's your countries laws not the USA's when it boils down to it anyways.
Maybe you'll find a good sale -
Raymond Luxury-Yacht Notebook Consultant
Go ahead and download it man; it's not worth all this chagrin. If they accuse you of piracy, just tell them you already paid Steve for the software.
-
have your aunt mail it to you after you get it and maybe scan the receipt
if she used a credit card or check here she can get a copy.
-
Try Carbon Copy Cloner. It's Freeware.
Directions for your Aunt:
- Start Carbon Copy Cloner
- Insert the DVD
- Choose the DVD as the Source Disk
- Choose New Disk Image as the Target Disk
- Choose Copy Everything from Source to Target under Cloning Options
- Click Clone
-
This is going to be one hell of an e-mail attachment! lol

stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
-
You can't send e-mails that big. The only solution would be to send it via BitTorrent or something like that. I'm not sure about this whole thing though. Apple may have it's own protection systems. Like the other guys said, maybe it's better to download it from BitTorrent sites.
-
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
maybe she can just return it andthen paypal you the money and you buy it yourself?
-
Or maybe there isn't a local store...or even the price is waaay to big?
Pricing in Europe for Apple products is made with this equation in mind: 1US=1Euro, so... -
Thanks everyone for their opinions. First of all, my aunt bought it for me, she won't be using it. She has a mac at her house with 10.3 (Panther I think), shes not a techie, so she doesn't care for leopard. She just bought it for me because she knew I wanted it and was looking for a way to get it legally.
And yeah nothing will happen if I download it. Pirating in Venezuela is like eating mcdonald's in the US (pardon the comparison...lol), it's part of normal life, but I lived in Canada and that changed me I guess, and I am already in my 4th year of computer engineering, I will probably be developing software for mac soon, so yeah, I've slowly been trying to change people's minds around here, my family, friends, etc, to try and buy stuff legally, but it's hard sometimes here, as minimum wage is only $300, and our currency is too weak against the dollar 1 to 2150. If you only make $300, are you gonna spend that on half of what vista or whatever software costs, or are you gonna buy it pirated? I'm not condoning piracy, but sometimes when you cant you cant...you know?
Anyway I'm lucky I have a good job and get paid relatively well so I can have the luxury of buying a mac (not many around here), pay for legal music at the itunes store, and now buying my first legal OS (tiger came with the macbook). It's a very hard thing to swallow when you are so engulfed in piracy but I wouldn't want somebody downloading a program I worked my ass off for free.
To the people asking, no apple stores in Venezuela, or online. Only apple resellers with ridiculous prices (the macbook costs $3500US here). Thankfully I know a LOT of people and they are all willing to help me, that's how I got this macbook.
Anyway, thanks everyone. Xander, I will tell my aunt to do that, maybe we will get lucky. If not, then I will see when I get there. Might just tell her to return it and wait until I go to europe this december and get it at an apple store there. Dont think i will have that much patience... -
I'm curious passive101, how do you know so much about my country? just the news? or do you study political sciences like sepandee?
-
I am not condemning it, just saying that downloading from torrent and getting someone to send it to you over the internet is equally illegal (which is not that illegal anyway...) -
.
And no Apple Store in Vancouver yet, darn it! Not until 2009! It'd better be a flagship! -
It's amazing how many things are in the news and a day later are forgotten. I hope things in your country get better for you, but it sounds like you will be stuck with socialism for a long time now, considering even tighter ties with Cuba and Russia.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best my friend
So my aunt bought me Leopard...
