I have been reading the forums here a lot and have finally decided to get a MBP on the part that is a nice machine and the new leopard OS just looks sweet. Lets just hope it is Friday. Anyways I was just wondering if I should wait until they add the penryn chip but who knows when that would be. But if they add them in the start of the new year I think I could wait that long but would it be a total overhaul of the MBP or would they just change the processor. If they just change the processor to a faster one I do not think it would be worth it to wait but if they change it all I might. Any insight on how they would upgrade the MBP would be nice.

Heading to the local mac store later today to check out the different screens. Also does anyone think I could get a better deal at the store then the online store? In other words some free gear to go along or whatever?

First of all there are plenty of posts about the Penryn CPU speculation on these forums do some searching.

You will not get a better deal or free stuff because you buy it from an Apple Store... unless by free stuff you mean a white plastic Apple bag...

If you can wait then by all means wait, the upgrade if it happens will likely be only the new Penryn 45nm CPU and not a totally overhaul of the system.

Its always a gamble. You have nothing to go on but rumors, at most educated guesses.

No one can really tell you what Apple plans to do. All we can do is speculate. Also, if Apple does update the MBP in Q1 2008, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be in january.

you could wait for the 45nm but then you will want to wait for the 45nm quad core then you will want to wait for the 32nm quad and then you will want to wait for the 32nm 8 or 16 core ........
If you want a mac now just buy one :D

Yeah technically you can wait forever - there's always something better coming.

Personally I am waiting for LED/SR/x3100 macbook or 1680x1050 mbp.

I don't see a reason why you can't wait till Friday. It's only like 3 more days and this way you don't have to upgrade the OS for $9.95 or something.

I would imagine that orders placed before friday will be shipped at least 2 weeks sooner. Do you realize how many people are waiting to place their orders ON FRIDAY!? Apple is literally going to get thousands of orders that day. I wouldn't want my MBP waiting in that queue.

I'd order now and upgrade myself. They will probably throw the Leopard disc in with the order since your MBP won't actually ship until after the release. So you wouldn't be stuck paying the $10 shipping anyway.

    Order NOW!

I suppose I should order now even if they do not throw in the leopard its still only $10. Waiting is the worst part of ordering online.

Why not purchase from your local Apple Store? Are they already out of stock?

My understanding is that if you purchase a new Mac on Friday at an Apple Store, they will give you Leopard right then (if it's not already installed).

Well the people at the apple store said they do not do student discounts. So that ruled out that idea.

Hm? All Apple Stores honour Student Discounts...don't they? That is, unless you didn't qualify in the first place...

There is some benefit buying from the online store vs. the brick N mortar. You will be able to customize your order. You will have HDD choices as well as choices of glossy or matte display. In the brick N mortar store you buy what they have but if all you are going after is the base config then I wouldn't waste time, I would just buy it at the retail store.

BTW this question about "Should I wait" comes up so much. Although it's a valid question if the hardware you are going after has gotten long in the tooth and you are wondering what's next, but for processor upgrades which won't ship until next year? No one here or anywhere will know except Apple. Just because Intel releases a new processor doesn't mean that Apple's next machine will undoubtedly ship with it nor may Apple immediately speed bump the MBP's.
Example of Apple missing the boat, the Macbooks. No Santa Rosa YET.
