okay guys...some one help me out here...the mac is hella fine..like the single most atractive laptop in the world....i want one SO BAD....i can taste it...

But i'm scared to buy one, i have used PC all my life...

i love -every single- feature that the mac comes with, i've used one hands on before and i love the enterface and options...

but i'm worried it wont be able to run all the programs i use on a daily basis...when i discovered first hand that mac couldn't even handle .exe programs, i freaked out...

so please...educate this pore dumb fool..cause i want to buy one so bad...but i dont want to hinder my productivity.

on a dailey basis i use:

World of warcraft(already know its mac compatible)
    Microsoft office
mIRC(ALOT, cant do with out it)
    MSN
    ICQ
    Yahoo
    AIM
    Adobe Acrobate Reader
    Winamp(Really worried about this one)

    and miscilanious other stuff....

    come on guys...earn apple a sale :p

With a lot of the chat programs... your looking at a third party program.

AdiumX covers = MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, AIM

But the only bad thing is that you don't get all those features you would get in say msn... handwritten recoginition, games, etc.

MSN on Mac DOES NOT Support Webcam.

Other than that... the other things aren't really a big concern. Instead of using Winamp, you'll get used to using iTunes as its simplier to use.

nah, i'm an advanced winamp user, i watch broadcast internet TV and Listen to the Radio on there, and as far as i've seen, not a single other program out there offers Digitaly important, which is the main thing that i listen to( I LOVE MY TECHNO)

i've heard awefull things about itunes any ways, i had planned on just uninstalling it when i got it cause i sure as hell am not going to pay .99cents a song

i dont really use the webcam on msn any ways...i've never even owned one, so i dont guess ill be missing that...

uhm... so what about mIRC? i'm sure there is a mac version out there, i just have to find it(there are tons of other versions, why not? Lol)

For Itunes... you don't "have to pay" for .99 cent songs.
It can be used to just organize your music collection if you already have songs.

Say you got 5GB of MP3's... it'll just organize it by artists, type of music (TECHNO),song title, etc.

When you search a song... it'll only take seconds cause everything is organized in those groups listed above.

Also with itunes, it can rip music off cds so you can listen to it on your computer. Only disadvantage is it rips to m4a or some format like that and isn't very widely used.

As for mIRC, check out www.macupdate.com ... most programs can be found there. Its like a Mac version of www.download.com

Oh badass man ... uhm what about the streaming video and music? *frequently watches anime shows and listens to internet radio on winamp and cannot do without it*

and i know you dont have to pay for it....i was just saying... :p *does have roughly 5 gigs of mp3s though :p some are wma's , which probably wont work on mac*

Streaming video and music might be a little tricky... but there are other apps that will do that...

I use Realplayer for some of the streaming music...
And what used to be Windows Media Player for videos... but Windows has stopped supporting it and is offering Flip4Mac player for free i think.

And as for wma's.... they're supported by iTunes...
You'll be surprised of how many file extensions Mac OS X can support..
But its just harder to find apps for certain file extensions.

    hmmm *bites lip*

    *still isn't sure*

i guess time well tell...i really wouldn't mind having a mac, but i'm not sure if the sacrifice in productivity is worth it....

will have to wait and see i guess..do more reasearch on my own...

You don't have to go all out on a Mac Laptop... you could always try a updated version of of the Mac Mini (with an Intel chip when they come out with one) or you could pick up a used system for cheap.

Just make sure it has OS X 10.4 installed, at least a G4 1Ghz +, and 512mb of ram, and you should have a pleasuable experience.

If you want to read up on some forums... both have their respective forums
    www.macnn.com
    www.macrumors.com

well i've got some prerequisit requirments for my first notebook, and the new macs line up perfectly..hence why i'm so in love...

*sighs* ahh the sacrifices we make...

still thinking hard about it though...we will see....i might get an old POS one for like 400 bucks if i can afford it just to toy around with it and get used to it before i spend big bucks.....i'm -not- sure though...

I love iTunes - much better than Winamp. That's just my opinion. It's very easy to convince someone who wants a Mac as much as you do to get a Mac! Do you want me to tell you what you want to hear ? lol...

All joking aside, Mac's are great machines. If your needs are solely confined to those described in the list of programs, then I would go for it. Most if not all of htose apps (or some close variant) are available on the Mac platform. If you don't feel like dishing out the cash for office, there's always "OpenOffice", a free alternative. Yes, the macs are gorgeous, but maybe it isn't suited to your particular needs. Maybe you should fill out the FAQ so that we can find a suitable Mac model, or, if there is non, a PC. Good luck!

Lol i guess your right...i guess i was just looking for a:

"sure all those programs work great on mac, getcha self one!"

    but meh...nothings perfect....

for an open minded free thinking liberalist, you'd think i'd be more open to change...then again....does a crack addit spontaniously switch to herion because the pusher is a cute chick?

    Nnnahhhhh

itunes can rip CD's to more than one format, namely it can rip to MP3 which is compatable with everything basically. You won't be able to stream video but itunes does have a very nice internet radio system.

with a .wma file it will convert it to a different format and leave your original file alone. I don't think you would compromise much by switching to Itunes. you can stream videos from many places, or you can just purchase them ^_^ haha

but in my opinion a windows power user will be much happier with windows than switching to mac.

World of warcraft(already know its mac compatible) Yes, mac version around
Microsoft office Office for mac, or openoffice, or appleworks (kinda crappy)
mIRC(ALOT, cant do with out it) mIRC isnt available for mac, but there does appear to be other clients available for mac
MSN,ICQ,Yahoo,AIM Adium, it has most IM protocols
Adobe Acrobate Reader Apples already can open pdf files in Preview (can get adobe, but no real need to)
Winamp(Really worried about this one) Itunes/Quicktime combo for mainstream stuff and VLC player for other underground formats, should cover all your winamp uses

As for other misc programs, there may be a mac equivalent, it really depends on what it is.
But based on what you listed for daily uses, i would say a mac machine would work nicely for you.

What i could recomend doing is buy one, try it out for a couple days, and if the system really isn't for you, just return it within the 1 or 2 week return period. Then you get your money back and can get a windows machine if you find you really need it. Or just keep the sweet macbook pro. If i had the money i would so have one myself.

VLC is highly multiplatform, it works on a lot, and is nice. Only thing i have trouble with with it is h264 files on my ibook g4, note enough power to keep up.

it is pretty fast if u have software that are universal, but u might find it sluggish when they are running thru rosetta... scroll in firefox kinda lags but it doesnt lag in safari. so im guessing its coz firefox isnt universal yet.

Why do people use firefox on mac?? I find safari to be nicer then firefox. I see no reason to add another browser that isn't quite as good as safari (firefox doesn't pass acid2, safari does).

the whole reaosn for using fire fox is because IE is an inferior web browser....with apple, there is no need, because safari is superior to them all..

unless your accessing web pages that arn't normaly accessable on safari (i ran into one the very first time i used an apple)
