I have a spare Intel Core i7-720QM from an HP DV notebook laying around. I've done processor swapping in different systems before so im no noob at it, such as replacing a quad core Q9000 for a quad core extreme QX9300.

I was thinking about getting the new 15 inch MBP with the Core i7-620M and swapping the processors, putting in my Core i7-720QM.

Is it possible? Or are they soldered to the board? Or is it through sockets?

All Apple Laptop CPUs are soldered in. Not possible.

soldered onboard. besides that, it would void your warranty.

while "not possible" is not technically correct... it would be extremely difficult without very expensive and proper tools... and experience.

soldered BGA chips, not swappable unless you have a reflow station and lots of expensive soldering tools .. and a pin compatable BGA chip to attach ... and even then a medium chance of success

Technically "embedded" Processors cost a lot cheaper than their socketed counterparts.
I believe Apple made a pile for every machine sold.

True, embedded are cheaper AND thinner.
there is no extra substrate for the pin attachments on the chip itself, and the socket takes up a couple dollars and a few mm's of height

its a space usage thing too... saves a lot of room when you look at how flat they make the MBPs anyways.

Wow, that sucks. My Dell Inspiron 1525 has been running fast for 3 years because I was able to pull the cpu and put a new one in.

I was hoping to do the same with the MBP I am considering buying.

I think the only thing original on my Dell is the case, keyboard and motherboard. I suped up my display to 1920x1200, memory, HD and cpu to better components.

The bright side of it is that the Apple will hold its value much longer than any PC could dream of so you can just sell it and buy the newest model when the time comes.
