Hi,
Would it be possible to take the Nvidea 8600GT out of a macbook pro and replace it with an X1600 from another macbook pro and vice versa.
Thanks

In short, no. Even if they used the same connection slot like Dell does with their laptops, the power difference and cooling solutions are no doubt different in some way. I seriously doubt the old Macbook's chipset would support the 8600GT anyway.

No.
random stuff to meet 10-character limit - did you know if you enclose this random stuff in brackets, it doesn't count it towards the 10-character limit? probably some random html fluke

No, I did not know that. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, surely the cooling mechanism is just the fans, and they will automatically adjust themselves to cool the machine.
What do you mean by the chipset wouldn't support it? -

A cooling system is not just fans, it includes thermal paste and heatsinks, which is different from one laptop to another and often one graphics solution to another. Also, while the chipset between the two laptops is not the same; the old Macbook Pro uses the Intel 945 chipset and the new ones (with the 8600) use the Intel 965 chipset. It's quite doubtful that the northbridge (where the GPU is located) is the same.

What benefits does the new intel 965 chipset have over the old 945 chipset?
-
Santa Rosa. With this, you get the capability for more memory (4GB, I believe the old Macbook Pros only supported 2GB), 800MHz front side bus, and wireless N/better graphics, though those two don't apply to the Macbook Pro.

I don't want to come down too hard but dude, if you don't know what the differences are between chipsets, heat sinks and the general state of laptop gpu''s ... even thinking about changing out graphics cards is way.. way.. out of your reach. Like eternal suggested, go do some reading of the many many fine posts on laptops and graphics cards.
a
ps I only posted this as the "can I change my gpu" is one of if not the most common question asked in every forum on notebookreviews... for which in 99.9% of cases the answer is always NO. A simple search will pull up 100's of posts.... I guess after 3.5years of answering the same question over and over I'm a bit touchy.... sorry -
Umm. Answer: NO.
Why? : The chips are soldered onto the logic board. Tightly o_o.
