I recently installed a vertex 2 SSD and ran the TRIM enabler for mac that I found online - groths.org Blog Archive TRIM Enabler for Mac
Ever since running it, I have had no problems, and TRIM support shows up as "Yes" in system profiler. However, I question the "legitness" of this and am wondering if anyone else has more knowledge?
Is TRIM actually enabled by running this very simple enabler? Or is it just a sham...

Apple supports and uses TRIM on its own branded SSDs on Mac OS X 10.6.7 now on newer macs... this simply takes that support and hacks it in to work on non-Apple SSDs

With a few registry tweaks, I can make all outward appearance of my Toshiba netbook appear to be running XP Pro, instead of the XP Home that was installed upon it. Have I "enabled" XP Pro? I suppose it depends on who you talk to.
Now, I have heard differing stories on the "enabling" of TRIM via configuration file manipulation. Some say the change is strictly cosmetic, insofar as you simply are telling system profiler to report TRIM as enabled. While others have said that without a doubt, once you change those configuration files, TRIM is indeed enabled.
Thankfully, all of us shall not need to wonder much longer, for as I understand it, OS X Lion will fully support TRIM. At that time, I will hopefully make my SSD equipped MBA so enabled. (Isn't it Odd that my Apple SSD equipped current version MBA is not TRIM enabled or available to be enabled via OS X, yet many say that Apple fully supports it?) -
while it would be easy to trick it to report back whatever you wanted... this actually changes out kernel extensions being used...

Do you have any details as to "enable" TRIM via Apple's support for such, on my 2010 MBA, with an Apple Branded SSD running 10.6.7 or later?
I mean I hear this repeatedly that Apple supports it on recent units with 10.6.7 (even before the new MBP's came out), but only with Apple branded SSD's. I have all that, right? -
There is directions all over the web for how to do this... its really a boring process when this trim enabler program does it all for you
-
I'm speaking of the Apple support you mentioned, not third party support.
"Apple supports", implies that I should be able to enable TRIM on my unit, using something found on Apple's site. -
no.. they only support it on newer models that come with it, its not retroactive to models that never supported it when they sold them.
-
Interesting, but maybe you should further qualify the statement by saying that many, if not most, current models(newest) are excluded.
