Well college is coming up soon(August) and I am still in need of a computer. I finally got a chance to look at the MBPs(I know, Im late) and im really impressed.
So these are my questions.
How much would the cheapest version($1999.99) cost me with the student discount?
I want to be able to run games on it so how will it handle current/future games running vista or xp through bootcamp?
How is the battery life?
Would it the worth the extra $500 to upgrade to the next version?
How does it compare to the Asus G1S(the other laptop I am looking at?)
Thank you for your time,
Juan

It should cost $1799 for the lowest version with student discount, although yesterday I was able to get it around $1668 with the glossy screen option, but not today?? Can someone else confirm that or was something wrong with my eyes?
Current games should be fine, with upcoming games at medium high. Vista and XP should run just fine when the final version of bootcamp is released with Leopard in October. You can currently run it with the bootcamp beta.
Battery life is somewhere around 3-4 hours.
Personally, I don't believe its worth the extra $500 to upgrade. -
the glossy thing seeemed to have only been a glitch that they have now fixed.
Another quick question, do I need the Juniper(sp) visa card in order to finance or can I finance through another store?
I say this because I don't receive my money until september 4th but need it by august so I would only be able to put down monthly payments. -
Apple used to have the Bill Me Later service. I'm sure they still do. But other than that, just other credit cards.

You can finance however you want. I've heard battery life stories on the new mbp with the LED LCD ranging from 4 to 7 hours.
With the student discount you should be able to pick up the base model for 1,799 with a $100 discount on a printer, and a $200 discount on an iPod.
I too think it is not worth it to upgrade for $500 unless you are going to be doing some serious gaming. If that's the case I would go so far as to recommend getting an older macbook and a dedicated desktop PC for your games, as it would come out to the same price. -
I dont mind games running at medium settings and the games I plan to run shouldnt be that crazy to run. I have a PS3 and Wii so gaming with them should be more than enough.
I'm going to look for the bill me later option and hopefully use that. If not ill just do a monthly payment from a local store.
Also should I go with the glossy finish? -
I recommend the matte screen, but you may like the glossy better for gaming. If you plan on taking your mbp place(outside or to classes with odd lighting setups) then you may have an issue with glare. If you can get a chance to test each then definitely do so, as this is one of the most important parts of the notebook(it's the one that you see the most!).

K, ill head out to some comp stores soon and see what I like better.

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
the macbook pro student discount is $200.
i bought the 2499 (2299 after student discount version) just a few hours ago.
it can run current and near future games VERY well.
the 128 megs of vram in the 1999 model might prevent it from running some future games, but its up in the air. its really hard to justify upgrading to the next version for $500. its like a $200 upgrade cost tops. but i had to have a mac and i had to have 256 megs of vram for my engineering school, so, what can you do?
if you want to be more future proof in games- thats mostly what the upgrade will score you. for $2000, you should have that. it shouldnt cost another 500. make your own decision.
good luck! its a really nice system either way. -
Thank you, I will have to discuss it with other parties(parents and grandparents) and see what they feel. Knowing them(well at least my mom) im probably going to have to go with the 128 which should be fine. If it gets bad to where I cant run games(hopefully at least 2 years from now) I will simply build me a pc.

i'm also thinking about getting a mac, and I was wondering in vista would i be able to use my logitech g5 mouse fully functioning if it was pluggedinto usb?
by that i mean standard right click, and then middle click and all that -
Your logitech hardware should run with mac.
I have seen logitech mouses on mac before, and they works just fine.
Go to logotech.com and you can download drivers to mac
