I have a question concerning third party ram in macbooks. Does putting in third party ram void the warranty? Also, if it doesn't, do you have to put the original ram back in before any service, or just give the ram and the notebook to the apple store? I ask because the computer belongs to someone who wouldn't be able to put the original ram back into the computer before it needed any work.

No, it does not void warranty, however Apple will not cover the new ram under their warranty, you will have to use the warranty that comes with the ram, which isn't bad considering most are lifetime warranties.

I believe it would be smart to put the original back into it before sending it in for repair or something, theres been reports of peoples Macbooks getting entirely exchanged for a new one, which isn't bad but you could lose that extra ram you paid for, and its always a good idea to backup your data regularly.

Not sure I understand your last part about someone you know.
