UPDATE: I would like feedback on my plan of attack at getting ubuntu, mac, and xp on a single macbook pro.

    1. Currently I have a bootcamp partition with windows xp. I will take that partition and make a clone of it via winclone.

    2. I will get rid of my bootcamp partition.

    3. I will make a 20 gig partition out of the now full mac osx hard disk for linux.

    4. I will run bootcamp and repartition what i had for windows. then i will throw the image of windows xp on that partition to get windows back to normal.

    5. I will install linux onto the 20 gig partition from step 3. Yes, that partition will be hfs+ or w/e, but linux is able to format partitions when it is installed. (note: step 4 and 5 should be interchangeable)

    6. I will run rEFIt to make booting from windows xp, mac, or linux easy. DONE!... if that works...

    Possible problems:

bootcamp will throw a hissy fit if i have 2 partitions when i run it.

cant think of anything else, but i need feedback before i do ANYTHING. this kinda scares me because i dont wanna have to reinstall everything on my computer for the sake of experimenting with ubuntu :S

Ok, so I have mac OSX leopard and windows xp currently on my computer. I love them both and it is nice being able to do just about everything with those two operating systems. Recently, my friend started playing with ubuntu linux. I REALLY want to try it out, but ive had problems trying to get everything to work. Here is my current problem:

I believe that all i need to do in order to start the process of installing linux is to partition my mac hd, but I cant! Ive been going to the disk utility trying to partition 20 of the 40 free gigs of space on my "macintosh hd," but it comes up with the error "unable to partition macintosh hd Filesystem verify or repair failed." Additionally, when im trying to make the partition it says, "WARNING: This disk appears to be partitioned for Boot Camp. The proposed changes may make this disk unbootable using Windows." Does this mean that partitioning my macintosh hd (if it is even possible) will destroy my windows xp partition? According to this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro it is very simple to triple boot with windows xp and OSX. Is there something wrong with my hd? Is there an easy fix to make partitioning possible? Anything else? Thanks in advance :D.

Btw, this is not much of a linux question. It is more of a "partitioning the mac hd while having bootcamp" question.

OS X will not allow you to partition your main HD. You will have to instead partition your Boot Camp partition in Windows. There are several guides online to do this, it is not as straight forward as installing Linux on a PC, since Apple has not added support for triple booting on Macs.

Resizing the Mac HDD is possible, you have to use the diskutil program from the terminal.

Why not just install Ubuntu under a VM in OSX?
