I have a 15" Macbook Pro here with a formatted drive with Mac OSX Journaled.
I put in a retail copy of Snow Leopard and upon starting I hit and hold the Option key until it shows the OSX DVD icon. I click on it but then it changes to the regular Apple logo and stays there.
Is it a bad optical drive? If it was then how com eit recognized the disc i nthe first place?

First thing - how long are you letting the Apple logo sit? It takes a long time to boot from a DVD. You need to give it at least 5-10 minutes, depending on how old the machine is. It takes at least that long to boot from the Lion DVD on my MBP.
How old is the MBP? If the SL disc you have has an older build on it than when the computer was built, it's not going to work. For example, if the machine came with SL 10.6.8 already installed and your disc is 10.6.0, you're out of luck. -
I let it sit for half an hour, so that's not the issue.
The disc is 10.6 and I know for a fact that the computer was bought after that. I think this may be the cause. Gonna go buy a new disc right now. Thanks a lot!
