I'm thinking of getting an Ipod Touch. But before I do, I'm trying to figure out how it handle syncing of emails. Is there a way to set up syncing so that both the Ipod Touch and my macbook have the same emails? In other words, if I get an email on the Touch, how do I get it also on my macbook? Or if I delete one on my Touch, it deletes on my macbook?

    Am I making any sense?

    Thanks.

Use IMAP and you'll get what you wish for. :)

    Who is your email provider?

If they offer an imap connection, thats what you want. It basically is made for syncing email accounts across multiple computers/devices.

If youre using gmail, they offer it, hotmail you have to pay extra. Rogers doesnt have it, and id guess cogeco wouldnt either. Not sure about bell.

But basically look in the help pages of your email provider, and see if they mention imap anywhere. Or google them, and include imap in the search (Rogers imap email) and youll find out.

If they just offer a pop connection, then theres ways around it. But as far as i remember, they revolve around forwarding emails to other providers (like gmail), or something similar to that. If you use a client, it may be transparent, though ive never used it extensively to know.

When you create an email account in the Mail app on your Mac or in Settings on your iPod, you have an option to select what kind of account it will be. IMAP is an option given and you can select it so that when you check an email on your Mac, it shows up on your iPod touch and its in the same state (its been read on your Mac, so its shown as read on your iPod).

If you use Mail on your macbook, just set up mail sync in iTunes in your iPod Touch menu. If you use Gmail, enable IMAP in your Gmail settings, and then add the email account in your iPod Touch. If you have Yahoo or Hotmail, you are SOL as these companies require you to pay a fee for mail forwarding and whatnot.

I was pretty pissed about that myself. It's enough to make me consider dumping a Hotmail account I have used for over 10 years!

Yup. its that easy. I set up Mail on my new mbp a few weeks ago and was shocked when it just "worked" on my iphone once I synced. haha

Luckily, it works with my Hotmail account and Windows phone. Instant push too.

My university uses edu@live accounts (essentially hotmail), I get POP3 and forwarding but not IMAP. So, I made a gmail account that retrieves mail from my hotmail account. I then have my incoming server set in Mail.app to gmail's imap server and the outgoing server set as hotmail's SMTP server.

I retrieve my e-mail from gmail but send out e-mails using hotmail's server. This way I don't have to put up with gmail putting "on behalf of" in all my e-mails that I send out as my live@edu account in gmail.
