I'm quite confused. In system profiler, it says
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

I insert a DVD+R DL (Verbatim made in Singapore, MKM 001) and when I try to burn something, disk utility starts up, finishes the burn and makes me a coaster. Same thing happens when I switch into imgburn. Some peripheral error occurs. So....what's going on here? Is my computer lying to me about being able to burn dual layers?

Can you try burning a CD-RW and DVD-RW and see if the same happens?

Mmm...Don't have access to a CD-RW or a DVD-RW but out of curiosity, what would that test prove?

Also, I've been able to burn CDs and DVD+R and DVD-R with no problem.

i think the idea of the test was to see if trying to burn anything results in a coaster. take it in to the apple store and show them your dilemna. have them make a dl dvd coaster for you. then they will fix it.

If it does not work, you are guaranteed there is a physical problem. If it does work, then it is probably the media being the problem.

I noticed that some brands of DL dvds wont work with my MBP. OSX said that there was some problem, but the dvds work with other pcs still.

Not all DVDs will work in all DVD drives, and I guess you just gotta find a brand that works.

I have to agree that the disc support for these dual layer drives are very specific. I've tried Maxwell DL discs and they don't work and I stick to Fujifilm which seem to work. It might even vary spindle to spindle since they can source it from different locations or change their formula. For regular DVD+R I use Verbatim, while cheaper generic brands I've tried don't work consistently.

Try Verbatim DL. I use them and I've had zero issues on my MBP.

Thing is..I am using Verbatim DL :/

It's weird though that I can burn stuff onto a Verbatim DL using a UJ-857E on my friend's Macbook while my UJ-857D on my Macbook Pro can't burn it.
