- Will USB 3.0, ever be adopted by Professional audio equipment like Firewire was?
- Will Apple bring back firewire in a new revision of the Macbook, even though you can buy new white macbooks with firewire right now?
-
No one will know, all that can be said right now is speculation unless there is an official release by Apple
-
-maybe
-no -
1) I strongly doubt it. It's not even close to being as good as Firewire
2) Same as above. I'll even venture a resounding "no" here. -
Fw 3200 Ftw

Oh yeah!
Well, I guess I could "settle" for FW1600, or even a working FW400 connection
-
I think he doesn't mean the speed.BTW USB 2.0 utilizes ~50% of its claimed speed,whether FW800 utilities 97%.And FW 3200 will be 3.2 Gb/s

The question was:
This question was answered by a "no" by me. Not at all because of theoretical throughput. Had he asked about whether USB3 would be good to use for external disks, I'd have said "Yes, in some circumstances". We're talking "pro audio" here not merely "how fast is it".
You're right, I'm not talking speeds at all(even though I agree with what you said there), although a much lower overhead is important and the fact that FW doesn't bogs down the CPU is paramount when we talk audio, but also audio with no drop-outs and no errors is important, not to mention voltages and daisy chaining. USB will never be able to do those thing (macs even do Target Mode) or even "network over FW" which is part of the protocol.
No matter how fast you make USB it will still not be as good and as versatile as even FW400. -
Speaking of the faster firewire, is it still in the works? I've yet to see FW3200 or FW1600 on any computer.
-
both 3.0 and 3200 are in development
-
I think once FW really catches on as mainstream as USB, it will be a phenomenon. When data will travel at it's advertised speed around 3.2GB/sec, USB all-together will become obsolete, even though USB 3.0 might get around 50% of it's advertised speed.
FW would be great for Professional Audio though.
