I have a feeling these flickering issues are due to the Nvidia gpus.

Just curious as to if your friend's Sony has an NVIDIA GPU?

Are you talking about the ATI x1900??

I've owned that model as well and I've NEVER heard of screen flickering issues on those. It must be an isolated issue with yours.

its a screen thing. it has to do with the response time of the panel. thats why some panels have more issues than other - for instance mine which blinks at times in addition to the low-light flicker. different panels might have different problems and thats what i think we're seeing here.

X1950XT 256mb on my desktop... the other laptop is the MBP with the radeon X1600. Like others have said, this issue is not the video card exactly, its more about the screen itself. I have a cheap Dell monitor... and those "tests" will stress out most normal screens... no matter the video card in your machine.

I think it depends on the precision involved in manufacturing the screen. If they have set the voltage well, then you should have no problem. But most users won't do this test. So this escapes apple's quality control.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I previously owned a UMBP with a LG screen (9C84) and I experienced no flickering. My new unit has a 9C85 display and there's plenty of flickering ;/. Blah!

My screen doesn't flicker, however when I run XP and I'm in firefox I noticed the text looks awful, actually all browser text is awful when I'm in bootcamp, completely different to when I'm in OS X, even though I've changed the text to be better in bootcamp.
