The next time that the MBP is updated, will they put a Blu-Ray player in it?

I would say it is likely. Mac is all about being innovative, so it actually surprised me that they don't already ship a machine with blu-ray capabilities. Dell does :D

Normally Apple isn't afraid of jumping early in technology (having no floppy drive on the original iMac, being one of the first to use USB), so I think Apple's main target is to skip "physical media" altogether as much as they can, and opt for online stuff (which they have done). I mean, sure, they'll probably have a Blu Ray burner option for the Mac Pro, but if Apple really wanted to do a lot with Blu Ray, I'd say they would've already done so.

I sure hope so, I want to jump ahead into the world of MAC, but without blu-ray, its hardly a jump ahead when i can get a windows operated notebook with blu-ray capabilities.

Why would you want to wast money on a blu-ray, it is already out dated.

I know they have been ignoring it entirely, which is very dumb on their part because buying the same movies i already own on standard-definition DVD through iTunes of the same quality, is no leap ahead.

I'm not so sure that they'll be joining in the Blu-ray bandwagon quite yet. It's still very very early days and blu-ray sales aren't projected to spike rapidly atleast for another couple of years. I don't think Apple would be incorporating the expensive blu-ray player in an already heftily priced MBP. It'ld just take the price a li'll too high for feasible sales. Probably, they might start keeping it as an option, but then again, it depends on whether they see Blu-ray MBPs as a significant sales area...

Well see, HD downloading is already here and it starting to spread, people got all excited that blu-ray won the HD vs Blu-ray battle, but what they didn't realize was streaming/downloading videos, was sneaking in. That will be the future, and it's not far away.

*Edit* For some reason my quoting of Macboy failed.

The Movies avaliable through iTunes aren't HD-Quality though, they are standard definition when played through a MacBook Pro, right?

You have to have an appreciation of the fact that it'ld take incredible online resources to be able to deliver a Blu Ray DVD onlline via the itunes store .. or for that matter.. any other online store!

I know, I realize that but all i want is a blu-ray drive on the MBP so that i can have the ability to watch blu-ray high-def movies, otherwise i cannot watch high-def movies at all on my MBP.

Just to clarify, Apple is on the Board of Directors of the Blu Ray Association, so technically they're on the bandwagon, they just haven't released anything Blu Ray :).

I dont want to stream though, I want to be able to buy High-Def blu-ray quality content from Itunes to watch through my MBP or a blu-ray drive. Either one would do just fine, when do you think one of these options will be avaliable?

*edit* My point is that Apple has yet to provide users with a way of watching Blu-Ray quality movies (aka high-def) on a Macbook Pro.

Blu-ray will not be dieing anytime soon. We're still not at the point where the mainstream society downloads HD movies from rental services and so forth.

Plus most people have bandwidth caps of some sort, leading them to bluray.

It's not going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe in 5-10 years, but thats the lifetime of a media nowadays anyways.

Well I still would much rather have a physical copy of what I paid for. Not just the rights to View it on one PC only. And can you imagine the amount of Storage space you would nee to store a small collection of BR movies.

For the price of the BR movies when they become available for streaming won't be much different then buying the physical item. I think I will be sticking with a physical copy for a while, that gives me the right to play it on what ever I want where ever I want, and as often as I want. To me that will be the limitations of Streaming BR or any content. It's just to locked up.

Say I download a nice BR from the Itunes store, I tell my buddy it was a great show and he is eager to view. So I say "sure you can borrow it".
But wait there is a catch. You only have 2 potions.

    1) Your give your notebook to your friend so he can take it home to watch the movie.
    2) He has to come to your house to watch the movie.

That is where I say no to streaming online content. It will be so locked up that you won't ever technically own the movie you paid 30 bucks for. YOu just have the rights to view on one setup at a time.

Not to mention the people who travel and still don't have complete access to a network that can support Streaming BR. The world just isn't ready yet for streaming HD content, with all the current limitations it has associated with it. I for one avoid Itunes store for my music. There are much better avenues out there. And I bet many of you here feel exactly the same way.
