    Here's a dumb question:
if I buy 2 Macs now and I buy Leopard later as an upgrade, can I use the one copy to ungrade 2 machines? I've done that with Windows XP but don't know if I can for OSX.
    thanks

You're not allowed to do that with XP, you know... And I don't think you will with leopard.

I bought the XP CD from my University 'Information Commons' and I have installed it on 3 computers.
Unfortunatelty, they can't do it for Apple because Apple refuses to allow them to sell the CD only at an educational discount.
If I buy it through the University Computer Shop I was wondering if it would be possible to do the same with Leopard.

You're not supposed to do this with Mac OS X either. That's why Apple sells a Family Pack license:

You can do it, but you're not allowed to according to the license agreement. Nothing to stop you except your own morals though.

The family pack is the legal way to go. Should be available from the education store with a discount, yes. Check out the Tiger family pack in the education store now and you should have an idea of how much Leopards family pack will be (almost certainly the exact same price).

No. The OS X Family Pack is US$199. There is no additional discount for Students with the Family Pack. However, the Single User license is discounted through the Apple Store for Education to cost US$69. You're limited to "A maximum of two (2) per software title may be purchased per academic year" under the Shopping Agreement. And since you only need 2 copies, that's probably the best (cheapest) choice.
