Is there a way of disabling the 9600m gt and using only the 9400m? I mean i want to use the 9400m in windows bootcamp. I know in windows laptops with 2gpu's, users can disable one gpu through the bios. But is that possible on the mac?

Apple has so far not released the necessary drivers or tools for using the 9400m under Boot Camp. This might change with the next version of Boot Camp that will come with Snow Leopard.

    fingers crossed.

With the 9400m you'll see huge battery improvements in Boot Camp.

do you know anyone who got it and actually used it? i'm quite interested. my mac runs too hot in w7 and it's unbeareable. 70's plus sometimes and it spreads to the plam rests. not high temps, but the warm palm rest drives me crazy

Think the first quote is regards to him probably using the base 15in MBP which only has the 9400m and can compare that MBP to one with the 9600m GT

Unfortunately no, i know D3X since a long time here on nbr and since the unibodies got released, we're desperately trying new ways to cool our macs. we're underclocked our gpu, undervolted our cpu, tried different versions of windows etc. he also has the 9600m gt and 9400m just like me.

I installed bootcamp 3.0 in XP, is it a beta, anyway no 9400m only the 9600m shows bootcamp control panel does not look any different no option to switch 9400m/9600m, the fan does sound like it is getting faster as the temps go up, but not very fast.

HWMonitor is only showing 2115 rpm for both fans only but the fans are adjusting.

I just ran the setup and i overwrote the older bootcamp drivers , it did not install the 9600m drivers , xp had to do it, the lan did not work and i had to re-install it.

So i dont know what to say, too early.

anyway xp is giving me a estimated battery life of 4-5 hours, I doubt it.

This was not a clean install , I just overwrote the existing bootcamp drivers.

My system was the late 2008 which I bought 2 days after the Unibody release so I've had quite a bit of experience with this generation.

Before the mid-2009 Unibody models, all MacBook Pro 15" models came with both the 9400M and 9600GT. It's not a comparison, but merely a fact that in Bootcamp we're not given a choice to run the graphic card of preference, and forced to run the battery guzzling 9600 GT instead of the 9400M IGP.

This IS the main reason why people complaining that "Windows running MacBooks hotter than in OS X, and that the power management sucks" This is not because of Windows itself, but the lack of graphic driver support in Boot camp to allow for better graphic card switching in comparison to OS X.

Through my research Nvidia has responded saying that they do allow for multiple graphic processor support under Vista, but Apple has chose not to incorporate this feature under their Boot Camp support.

Well I'm not sure about either CrossFire or SLi whether that would be available to OS X(especially for the MAC pro) in SL, but the ability to switch from your IGP to dedicated and vice versa in Boot Camp is desired, and better support in OS X SL without logging out would be ideal.

maybe they figure most people don't use Windows in a direct boot unless they are playing games... and would want the better video card... and anyone not needing better graphics for whatever reason is most likely running in a virtual machine.... which is what makes the most sense to me, i never have needed to use my 9400 in Windows.... why go through a whole stupid reboot if you don't even need better graphics capability?

I guess apple is in a state of advanced blindness then because if you try to goggle "macbook pro review windows" or "Macbook pro Heat windows", you'll come out with a lot of angry people or confused or sad, regretting purchasing their mac just because it wouldn't run windows efficiently. It's a mac, it's the best of both world. A mac runs windows but efficiently?? that's the question.

Did you install the drivers under Hybrid Sli or Hybrid Graphics?

Isn't Hybrid Graphics what we're looking for rather than Hybrid SLI which is a nVidia technology that allows 2 dfferent GPUs (IGP and dedicated GPU) to work together to increase performance?

it detects it while installing the drivers but as soon as i restart, only the 9600m gt appears on device manager. i wouldnt mind being locked onto the 9400m. i read about people installing the 9400m driver only and it displays 9400m in device manager, but it's actually using the 9600m gt with a 9400m driver. apple, please do something about it. it's only a driver issue. Can somebody bug Dox to release a driver for all mac fellows???????

same temps here on windows, though i recently downloaded nvidia system and my temps seemed to drop to low 60's from low 70's just by downclocking the card when windows starts and then restoring default clocks while starting a game on windows and then underclocking again when i close the game.It seems pretty good.

Wow!!!Nice temps. yesterday, i was going through the m17x review when i noticed it also had a 9400m. so it supports hybrid sli. I will try to get into contact with Dox so that he tries to mod the driver to make it support the 9600m gt instead of the gtx 260m. perhaps, we may get a working gpu driver.

Ok. I have Snow Leopard installed with the Boot Camp Driver 3.0. No visible difference, infact no Nvidia System Tools settings, although the KBDMGR seems to be finally fixed. Going to install NVidia drivers instead...

    Still no 9400m...

as far as I have found out, Vmware Fusion and Parallels 4 work in Snow Leopard as long as your running the 32bit kernel, but they both still call it "experimental" ....

VMware doesn't seem to work any faster for me... but it will in the future if they make it take advantage of some of the new features.... I have a new test version of VMware that has experimental support for running on the 64 bit kernel, but i haven't actually tried running the 64 bit kernel yet.

oh my god, i cant believe that i'm at 39c on os x atm and windows get soooo hot!!!!!!! the joy never lasts long. i restarted the laptop and went to the power options again and selected advanced settings. these options were no longer there. i believe that the problem is with the drivers. we need to wait for more hybrid drivers from nvidia or companies like dell etc. i think that if we get a modded inf which supports our gpus, we can use the dell studio xps 1340's gpu driver and if all stars are on our side, we may perhaps be able to enjoy hybrid sli. the problem may also be because i'm running w7 and w7 does not support hybrid sli. anyways, try installing dox 185.85 driver if you have vista and try it. also try the default gpu driver which was included in bootcamp 3.0. go in power plans and then select advanced configuration setthings. then you if it detects gpu, this means that it has detected the hybrid sli and this works on the mac. anyways, i'm pretty sure we'll have working drivers within the next few months. hopefully this will work out.

@Tinderbox (UK): please don't forget to go in advanced power plans and check if it detects hybrid sli. good luck.

i'm still trying out different drivers and will check their compatibilities.

    @ Luke1708

As it turns out, no matter which driver you install, hybrid sli will activate if you look at the advanced power options - GPU settings. But when you restart your macbook pro prolly the EFI will disable this function. So, Apple has to deliver an updated EFI version which does not disable hybrid sli. Folks, hybrid sli DOES work, only apple does not allow it.

Sure, the 9400M in Windows would be much welcomed. But the basic problem remains, Apple provide no power management drivers for Boot Camp. Battery life is still abysmal; the power consumption is around twice as high as in OS X.

Don't bother much more with this, you'll only get frustrated.

Whether its power management or EFI disallows hybrid sli, there should be a fix by Apple cause hybrid sli can be achieved. I just cant believe that a fix would be that hard to make. You can switch between graphiccards in Mac OS X but not in windows. This doesn't make sense at all.

Ok, I use windows 7. First of all, I deleted all my previous nvidia drivers. I downloaded the 15.37 nforce drivers for the nforce 730i and Extracted it to my c drive. Then, I cancelled the installation. I installed the SMU and ethernet etc but not the display driver and after this I went into the device manager. I clicked on my display adapter and clicked on update driver and then have disk. Through your nv_disp i installed 9300/nforce 730i (maybe 9400 works also didn't test that). Didn't restart my computer. Then, i updated my driver once more. But now, I chose automatically. From now of, the GPU settings of power options stays. Now, I'm figuring a way to have a hybrid sli icon in my system tray.
