I haven't been following the PC gaming world all that much (after all.. I have a PS3..). The question then... what is the big deal about Steam coming to Mac? Isn't Steam merely a portal (kind like iTune for music/video/apps?). It doesn't even mean that most games are then supported on Mac anyway. So I am a little puzzled with the news.

It does mean that Valve games are being ported to Mac, mostly notably The Orange Box. Another much anticipated Valve game, Portal 2, is now also promised to be coming to Mac.

With SteamPlay, as I think it's called, they're also allowing games purchased for Windows or Mac to be playable on the other platform without needing to buy the game again.

And finally along with this announcement, I believe it had been mentioned that Steam is providing some sort of tools for developers to facilitate porting games to Mac. So it seems like positive momentum. Course Apple would have to follow through in putting in graphics cards that are not only more capable but respectably aligned with the price points of their systems.
