    What is the best virus protection software for mac, and how necessary is it??

    You have a couple of basic choices. Norton, which noone says much good about. I would avoid it. Virex, which is used a lot by Mac users, and is given away free to .Mac users. (At least it used to be) I use the OSX version of the open source antivirus software, clamav (called clamavX). It's a great, comprehensive scanner, and free. The reality is that while there are lots of WinTel virii, there's not that much in the Mac world. Most of the virii I find are in my email inbox, sent to me from Windows users. They don't affect, or run, in the OSX environment so it's no worry, but some of these tools can help you isolate and delete the infected files.
