So I've been waiting, at the recommendation of some of you guys here on the forums, to wait after the WWDC before buying a MacBook since it was rumored that there might be a new refresh of the MacBook line.
Now that WWDC is over (is it over? are there any more announcements to be made? I have no idea what the time line of an event like this is) and, thus far, no announcements for anything computer/laptop-related has been made should I just go ahead and buy that MacBook I've been wanting for awhile now? I know I've also read, here, that Apple usually does not announce new laptops, etc. but some people have recommended to wait after the WWDC before making purchases.
Here are some of the pros/cons of the situation:
PROs (if I buy now):
- I get a free 8GB iPod touch
- I get to have that MacBook now after waiting so long
- I get to play around with the MacBook before fall semester starts again
CONs (if I buy now):
- I'm just afraid that they'll refresh the line a few weeks/months after I make my purchase -- and not only will it be a new refresh, it might even be a next-generation, complete new line/makeover
I can wait longer, if you guys deem it necessary. My current laptop works fine for my needs right now and can probably last me another year or so. I would just like to take advantage of the free iPod deal and finally getting my hands on a Mac that I've been wanting to switch to for over a year now.

The new lineup will probably happen in August, after Intel releases Montevina and the Penryn refresh.
-
If you are talking MacBook, buy now. It likely will not be immediately updated when Montevina is. If you are talking MacBook Pro, wait. It likely will be updated in the coming months.
Either way, the current machines are plenty fast for nearly any normsl person's use and will serve you well long after a new one is released. -
Not to hijack this thread, but do you think the mac mini will get upgraded? I see it still has the old Intel GMA 950 IGP... I thought that would be a great way to get started with OSX, that or a MacBook, but I'm waiting for the montevina refresh on that.
-
I am not sure what they plan with the Mac Mini. It seems like they are willing to let it die a slow death.
-
I was afraid of that.
I don't really do a lot of gaming any more, but the occasional game once in awhile, and I think the GMA x4500 would suit me perfectly! So I guess I'll just wait for the new MacBooks then.
-
Maybe it will be morphed into a iTV hybrid thingo?
really not surprised by the lack of announcements today, its always the case with these events, but I agree with the mbp wait for august suggestion. The mb will probably come later... intime for Xmas maybe.

i really hope new macbooks come this summer. whether it be a cosmetic upgrade, or a physical one. and a even faster GPU would be nice. how about a nvidia 9600m GT in a MBP??!?! that would be soo cool.

Really want to get a new iMac 24" to compliment my 2.2Ghz Santa MBP but worried they are just trying to get rid of the Penyrn cores before introducing the Montevina in september when the educational promo ends. When do ya reckon they will up the iMac to Monte and will it most likely be after the promo ends. Don't want to spend a load of cash and miss the new CPU and possibly GPU's from Nvidia, especially considering early performance benchmarks show Motevina its ancestors. Any thoughts much appreciated.
To the OP I would really wait it you can. On the MB the X4500 may actually be somehting good this time. Intels record with IGP's has not been that good but if there is one company out there that can spur the competition into concentrating on producing good GPU performance its Nvidia, and guess who Intel just went to war with. As for the MBP you really should hang on. A combination of new generation CPU's + Nvidia 9000 series GPU's along with a possible long long awaited physical refresh should be worth the effort. I know it hurts to wait but if you need it in the fall it may be best to hang on. -
I think Apple will completely re-do the Mac Mini, and actually make it a viable desktop. Just as they did with iTunes Movies and Apple TV, both were revamped after they realized it wasn't working well.
The majority of the computer market is still in sub-$1000, and as Apple now dominates the $1000+ market, they'll probably want to take a bigger chunk of the sub-$1000 market. -
Well, something better than a GMA 950 atleast.
I'm currently running my old desktop from last year, with an x3000, and it runs my old games great.
But unfortunately Sam, I think what you say is just conjecture at this point, with no solid evidence.
We can hope though.
It's that or a macbook. -
Yeah, its definitely only my prediction at the moment, not like I have any inside sources! I wish
