Now that i see this topic, is the same case (need receipt?) for MBP in other countries? (i will move to Germany this summer, but my laptop was bought in the U.S) or i only need the serial number?

not sure im in canada though. im gonna call apple now. From what i read, they go by the serial number from when you register the device. But need to confirm.

You only need the serial for the MBP in Germany. You should register it with Apple and get an Apple ID. The only thing a receipt gets you is a few extra days warranty. At least that is how it was with me. When I registered my MBP it showed the warranty started about a week before I bought it. I faxed Apple my receipt and got it changed to my purchase date. However I bought it from a retailer. Maybe if you buy from the Apple store they know the right purchase date.

Also if you login to Apples support page you can print out a page showing the warranty time for your registered products. In some countries where you don't get support from Apple directly but from a 3rd party they ask for this. But in Germany support will be from Apple directly and if you give them your serial they can look it up.

The same applies for the iPad in Germany. I assume its the same in the USA and Canada but I am just guessing. Call Apple if you are unsure. They will tell you.
