    Hello there,

I recently purchased the 15" macbook pro from apple online store. I immediately noticed that the screen was a lot less vivid/washed out than what I have seen from demo units at the store.

I did not find many similar complaints about the washed out screen so I was wondering if this is an isolated incident.

I have returned the unit and was thinking whether I should give it another shot (buying it in the store).
Please let me know what you think.

    thank you,
    josh

I think it is an isolated incident. I know a couple of people who have the MBP and none of them have recieved a washed out screen.

Might have been interesting to see what panel you had. Maybe Apple is using a new panel that's not as good as the earlier ones.

I think its the 9c84 screen. i've seen quite a few complaints about it being dull and not quite as vivid and crisp as the 9c85. But there are people who have confirmed the 9c84 as being vivid. So it's likely tht u have a 9c84 screen. try to contact apple and have your laptop or screen exchanged.

Control panel > Color > Calibrated display > Info > nr.13 or something like that.

I think Phil posted the location in Windows.
    In OS X, it's:
    System Prefs>Display>Color>Profile>#13>Display Info

that's what i have been telling. there are varied opinions concerning the screens. The 9c85 is supposed to be a bit yellowish. Mine is perfect and the colours are vibrant and the display quality is amazing. there's a whole thread about it over at macrumors.

    mine is 9C84.
but i dont find it too amazeing, thats sharp and bright, but its also a little pale. maybe thats because im coming from a dell studio xps 16 which had a good screen (but sucked at all else)
also is there any program like paint in windows i can use to edit photos?

iphoto only has a blur option.

Your 9C84 looks pale, even after you changed the gamma to 2.2?

no, i changed it to 2.2 and its ok.
i wrote that before i changed it.

so iv got the best display?

compared to other laptops iv had, only the dell 1080p RGBLED screen was better, this beats all other laptop screens.

I would say so yes. But opinions vary.

Interesting, because your MBP has higher contrast. The Dell has better color accuracy. I might prefer the MBP's screen because I love high contrast. But I've never seen the RGB LED.

How would you describe the differences?

i love my macbook pro because of all its great features, thers to many to talk about. although i do hate osx due to no games and lack of programs. and am using windows 7
(which has 9400 + 9600m gt together :D due to the new 10.5.7. if u use high performance battery settings, windows 7 will use both 9600 mgt and 9400).

anyway, even though i hate the studio xps 1080p screen has just so good, by far the best laptop screen ever.
its the brightest, has the best colours, wayyy more vibrant ans the colours are spot on.
the apple screen is good compared to other laptops but the dell puts its screen to shame.

although the bad point is 1920x1080 on a 16" is very hard to see.
i can see my macbook without stressing my eyes.

still hate dell though. (3 broken laptops, useless support and ugly)

just hope the next mac is rgb led.

Well spotted. I switched the numbers. It's 9C85 with better black levels and contrast.

I think that explains why owais thinks the RGB LED of XPS 16 is so much better.

Mine is 9c84, and both the vertical and horizontal viewing angle is really bad, so there is no way that this is the best display a mbp can have :)

yeh, i do find my display pale, may be because its very bright so everything looks white...

whats wrong with viewing angles, they are fine.

there is quite a bit of color shift, some gray color looks yellowish or greenish from the side, at least on mine, not that severe tho, but my recently sold mbp early 2008 has much better screen.

Oh well, can't win them all i guess :)
