So I'm almost ready to order my MacBok except for one thing.

I have decided to go with the 1.83GHz model, being I do not need a DVD burner. So, Should I go with 1GB of RAM or 2GB? 1GB from Apple is about the same price as any where else($90), however 2GB is not($450), and would order that off of NewEgg. What RAM should I get if I get 2GB? Any brand?

Now to the Hard Drive. Should I go 60GB or 80GB? I would think 80, because OS X takes up almost 20GB i've heard. I will buy this from Apple as well.

Then I am goign to wait a couple months before I waste my money on Applecare, to make sure if I actually need it or not.

dont buy ram from apple, ever. The 1gig configuration they sell is a rip because its 2 x 512 sticks for $200

I recently bought 1gig of G. Skill ram off of newegg and it works fine, also comes with a lifetime warranty. $80 for a 1gig

As for harddrive space, OSX does take up alot of room, but I don't really plan on using my laptop to store all my mp3s and other large files. 80gigs is about right, but remember that its also easy to change out the HD yourself so you could go with 60 and upgrade when you have the money and just turn the 60 gig into an external hdd

So just buy the basic, and upgrade aftermarket? The harddrive just slides in as easy as the RAM, correct?(I've never installed a laptop harddrive before)

What is a good hard drive? Is Western Digital any good? Or should I go with Hitachi? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822146043
is that one good? Or is there one better that I overlooked.

EDIT::: Hm, besides the 2GB of RAM, the Hard Drive seems to be chaper from Apple. SO, I think I will just buy the Hard Drive from Apple, and upgrade the RAM myself, thanks. But what brand of RAM, Corsair, Patriot, Transcend, or G. Skill?

for the harddrive i would do some research

i read about some brands being way too loud or causing the macbook to run even hotter

i dont think you can go wrong with a seagate though, 7200rpms would be cool if you want the fastest there is, but there won't be that big a performance difference versus 5400, so 5400 is more practical and its cheaper and goes up to 160gig

my first week of use with the macbook was awesome, then i started to see it slow down because of 512 RAM. RAM should be the first thing on your list. I MIGHT upgrade my harddrive in the future, but for now 80gigs is enough

ive never installed RAM before but it was easy as hell, just make sure to de-static yourself or whatever and push the RAM all the way in using what feels like excessive force

all i know about installing the harddrive is that it is user serviceable, so it shouldnt be too difficult?

I would strongly suggest you look at the offerings from Seagate.

Okay, from Apple. 1.83GHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, iWork. $1233 total. Not bad. Thats why I'm contemplating 2gb or not.
