Let's say I want to convert a WMA file to MP3. What should I use to do this?

Audacity is free and it's pretty good. You will need to download separate codecs to support MP3 (because it is proprietary, yada yada yada). There are instructions for that on the website, in particular check out their great wiki.
-
Try MediaCoder if you're up for something that's powerful and open source (But perhaps not with the nice GUI of other programs): http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/audio/

i personally use iTunes.

iTunes converts WMA to MP3? I didn't know that.
I used some free one I found and it screwed up the labellings for all the songs I converted. Witch was like 5 CD's -
^^^ the windows version can convert wma's but not the mac.
-
Format Factory works great. Completely free too.
Edit: Oops, didn't realize this was the Mac forum. Let's see now, when I had a Macbook... I think I just used iTunes. -
You shouldnt convert lossy to lossy anyway, it causes a lot of quality loss.
-
I use Switch

Seconded. I use iTunes rip my CDs into Apple Lossless files, and just deal with the extra space it takes up.

iTunes works great for all I need it to do, in terms of converting audio files.
-
switch or audial hub are my personal favorites.
