I always thought the focus was on the display stats, but when I looked up my T60, which definitely does not have as good a screen as a MBP 15, the stats were competitive, 1680 x 1050 (I got that from googling). Does something else go into this?

many things, such as viewing angles, and color reproduction for a small example. most laptops use a 6 bit TN panel ( cheaper and most consumers are happy with them ) and then you move to more high end panels such as an 8 bit TN or even 8 and 10 bit IPS screens which give unbelievable reproductions. in many cases people push how they are backlight and not the panel itself. for backlighting you can find the older CFL but most newer laptops have LED, WLED or RGBLED for backlights, this actually does not improve the panel and colors itself but in SOME cases can make the lighting come through the panel appear better ( nicer whites, more even color etc. )
resolution is more of an indicator of how much you can display on your screen at once and to help you figure out how sharp an image will be ( pixels per inch ) -
Thanks. What does Apple do of the extra things?

not much they use a slightly higher quality 6 bit TN panel than some of the consumer models. actually it is the same panel found in alot of Dell, Lenovo and HP machines. as there are actually very few panel manufacturers and you can easily wind up having 3 of 4 different panels in the SAME model of laptop of any manufacturer including Apple.
What goes into display clarity
